DIRECTOR

Jennifer Saylor, PhD, APRN, ACNS- BC 

Jennifer Saylor is an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Delaware and hold a joint position with the Department of Health and Nutrition. She earned her PhD from University of Maryland in 2011. Dr. Saylor has been a faculty member in the School of Nursing since 2001 after receiving her Master Degree in Nursing, specializing as a Cardiopulmonary Clinical Nurse Specialist. Dr. Saylor became the Kamp for Kids Director in 2008 succeeding Dr. Judy Herrman, who began Kamp in 1999. Kamp has a long history and also serves as a service learning course for University of Delaware nursing students.

Dr. Saylor’s expertise is in transition to college of emerging young adults with type 1 diabetes and psychosocial needs. She works collaboratively with the College Diabetes Network as the Research Liaison and as a member of their Campus Advisory Council Committee and Clinical Scientific Committee. Jennifer has presented to numerous audiences locally, nationally, and internationally on topics related to college students with type 1 diabetes, leadership, mentoring, global health, simulation, and transitioning. She has published in a variety of journals and completed funded research focusing on type 1 diabetes among college students. The combination of Jennifer’s clinical practice, scholarship, diabetes camp directorship, and involvement in the College Diabetes Network illustrates a strong commitment to diabetes research, policy, and campus life for college students with diabetes.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

April Prior, MSN, RN, CHSE

April Prior is a Simulation Lab instructor at the University of Delaware. Currently April teaches in Medical-Surgical skills labs, as well as Diversity and Psychosocial Simulation labs for undergraduate nursing students.  April’s background is in Critical Care and School Nursing.  Her nursing experience includes working in neonatal intensive care, pediatric intensive care, pediatric home care and school nursing.  April  has been at the University of Delaware for over 3 years and a nurse for over 20 years.  She earned her ADN from Wesley College in 1996, BSN & MSN from Wilmington University and is a Certified Health Simulation Educator.  April is very excited to be a part of Kamp for Kids this year and is looking forward to meeting all of the campers and their families!

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Amy Jackson

Amy Jackson, is currently an undergraduate honors nursing major and public health minor at the University of Delaware with experience as a research assistant for the School of Nursing. Ms. Jackson is currently working on her senior thesis and on track to graduate with an Honors Degree with Distinction in May 2020. Throughout her baccalaureate education, her role as a research assistant provided her with opportunities to participate in studies examining young adults with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) during the transition periods to college and the workplace. In addition, her efforts in this area under the mentorship of Dr. Saylor culminated in a manuscript that is currently under review.

During her undergraduate career, Ms. Jackson has been involved with the University of Delaware’s College Diabetes Network Chapter. Additionally, she volunteered with Kamp for Kids in the summer of 2017 and participated as a student nurse during the summer of 2018. This summer, she looks forward to continue working with children with Type 1 Diabetes and spreading knowledge and awareness about TIDM.

KAMP NURSE

Kimberly Shoe, CPNP, CDE

Kimberly Shoe is a pediatric nurse practitioner and certified diabetes educator who has worked in the Endocrine department at A. I. duPont Hospital for Children since Sept 2004. I’m a certified insulin pump trainer and have worked closely with new diabetes technology through the years. I medically organize and educate nursing students for a diabetes day camp for kids with type 1 diabetes held at University of Delaware annually. I now work closely with psychology to better manage this family-centered disease through a collaborative diabetes/psychology clinic and evening group sessions. I’ve had type 1 diabetes since 1986 and have a wealth of experience growing up with the disease that includes a passion for diabetes camps.

 

KAMP NURSE

Caitlin Moran Schaefer, RN, RD, CDE

Caitlin Moran Schaefer is a pediatric Endocrine nurse, registered dietitian, and certified diabetes educator at Nemours A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics from James Madison University in 2004 and her Bachelor’s of Nursing from Drexel University in 2009. Caitlin has always had a passion for working with children and adults with diabetes. She has been a certified diabetes educator since 2012 and has worked with various populations with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes in Chicago and New York City. She is excited to be back in her hometown of Delaware and is looking forward to her first year at Kamp for Kids.

 

KAMP NURSE

Carol D. Cameron, RN, CDE/CPT

Carol D. Cameron  I began my career in nursing at A. I. DuPont Children’s hospital in 1987 after graduating from Cecil Collage with an Associate’s Degree.  I had worked on the inpatient unit taking care of new onset patients with Diabetes and other inpatient Endocrine disorders for 15 years.  I transferred to the outpatient Endocrine department and became a Certified Diabetes Educator and Pump Trainor.  I have been helping at several Diabetes camps over the years and very much enjoy being able to give families a much needed break, while helping the kids be active and have fun in a safe environment.
