Kamp for Kids Family testimonials

“Our son was diagnosed at 4-years-old last year and attended camp a short four months after diagnosis. The youngest camper last year, [he] also received the Bravest Camper award for being willing to try a new insulin injection site (his bum!). Thanks to camp and Nurse Kim, who is a T1D herself, he was unafraid to try the new site and we still use it daily for his evening shots. Without camp, I can’t imagine that two overwhelmed parents would have taken on something new like this and we are SO grateful for the community we found in Kamp.

Almost a full year later, [our son] still talks about his camp friends by name and how he can’t wait to go back this year. I can’t put into words how much of a positive impact being around other children and adults who have T1D has on our son. He gets his Dexcom CGM next week and he refers to it as “the one that Nurse Kim has.” Depression and feelings of isolation are high in kids with T1D, but programs like Kamp for Kids show our children that they are not alone and that they can do anything else other kids can do. He is really looking forward to the pool days this year!”

“Kamp for Kids has always been my favorite camp. I started as a camper and now as a junior camp counselor. I enjoy helping the nursing students and campers. This camp is very beneficial to all the participants. The nursing students are getting hands on experience and the campers are learning how to properly manage diabetes. It is amazing to see kids of all ages learn and play together. I am grateful for the amazing learning experience I had.”

“[My daughter] attended Kamp for Kids beginning at age 6 and each summer thereafter for the next 14 years.  Each summer, you specifically tailored all activities and learning experiences to her age group. From early childhood, tweens, the tough teen years to her ‘graduation’ at age 20, you and your staff catered to her needs, pushed her a little bit, and challenged her. At every turn, you encouraged her, gave her huge confidence, showed her acceptance and taught her about life without limitations.

Today, she is mid-way through nursing school with a goal to become a Nurse Practitioner/Diabetes Nurse Educator.

I thank you, and your tireless efforts in keeping Diabetes Kamp for Kids running successfully every year, for this wonderful gift of a beautiful, healthy life for my daughter.”

“My family has been attending Kamp for Kids for at least 6 years. It is a wonderful affordable camp that my children are more than excited about and really look forward to each year.

I am extremely grateful for this camp opportunity for many reasons.  I would have to say the most significant reason for me is that it is the only camp where both my children can attend together. My daughter has Down Syndrome.  Having a special needs child with Type 1 Diabetes is extremely challenging and there are very few camp opportunities for children like her. I remember feeling overjoyed that my son and daughter could experience summer camp activities TOGETHER. Knowing that I can send my daughter to a camp without worry where she is welcomed regardless of her diagnosis and is safe in such caring hands is a blessing.”

“The kids love and look forward to this camp every year. [My older son], age 9, who has been pumping for 4 years learned to calculate insulin to carbohydrate ratios and correction factors!  Yeah!

And [my younger son], age 7, who is not T1D but goes to Kamp to learn about diabetes because of his brother, has been calculating carbohydrates per serving ever since camp!  I think this camp is just as important for siblings as for the T1Ds themselves.

Finally, I look forward to this camp every year because I can take a break from constantly monitoring and KNOW that they are safe.

Thanks so very much for all that you do for our family and others like us!”
