CPL FOR PORTFOLIO OR SKILLS ASSESSMENT
The Portfolio or Skills Assessment CPL process is being built during the 2026-27 academic year for students matriculating in Fall 2027. The information below outlines general information as of today.
Starting in Fall 2027, matriculated students may be eligible to earn credit for select UD courses by having an academic department assess a portfolio or demonstration of skills.
Portfolio assessment: Students demonstrate mastery of the learning outcomes of a specific UD course by submitting an organized, detailed portfolio. The department outlines the minimum content requirements, which will vary by course and discipline. Students may submit a portfolio request at most two times for a given course. The second portfolio cannot be submitted within 30 business days of notification of the outcome of the initial submission.
Skills assessment: Students demonstrate mastery of the learning outcomes of a specific UD course through a hybrid review of prior learning which includes an oral or written examination. The responsible department outlines the list of skills to be assessed and provides a rubric.
CPL is proposed and approved by individual academic departments. If a department approves a course as eligible for Credit by Portfolio or Skills Assessment, no eligible or qualified student can be refused the opportunity to pursue it.
Eligible students must have matriculated to UD in or after Fall 2027.
Portfolio or Skills Assessment credits appear as “Transfer Credit” on a student record. Grades or scores may appear on an unofficial transcript, but not the official transcript, and will not count in the GPA. Credits do not satisfy Residency requirements in the degree audit. Students are responsible for requesting credit through the academic department. There is a non-refundable fee of $75 per credit, charged to a student account when the credits post to their record.

Individual Undergraduate and Graduate courses approved by an academic department to earn CPL credit will be listed on this page, including:
UD course(s) and credit(s) earned for successful completion
Eligibility
Brief outline of the review process and assessment rubric
Whom in the academic department to contact to request consideration
To potentially earn Credit for Portfolio or Skills Assessment, matriculated students must initiate the request by doing two steps, sending an email (first) and submitting a form (after the assessment). Note that students may only do this while matriculated (after the first day of their first UD semester).
Email: Send a request from your udel.edu account to the department contact, with this subject line: Credit by (Portfolio or Skills Assessment), # for the UD course, your name and UDID. In the message itself, include:
Your name, UDID, and term you matriculated to UD
The # of the UD course, with a brief summary of why your making this request
Start a dialogue with the department about next steps, eventually scheduling an appointment
Respond with any relevant documentation requested by the department
Submit this form: Complete a College Approval to Transfer Credit (CATC) form (coming in Fall 2027). The form will route through the student’s Asst. Dean or Graduate Program Coordinator for approval.
In the Comments section of the form, provide the name and udel.edu email for the faculty or instructor who assessed your work, and the date this was done.
Both items are required before your credit would be posted.
After you have successfully completed the assessment at the level required, the academic department will notify both you and the Registrar’s Office by email, confirming approval for you to earn the UD course.
The Registrar’s Office will “match” the department’s confirmation with the approved CATC form and save both as part of your official record. The Registrar’s Office will post credits and bill the non-refundable $75 per credit fee in September, February, and June. For questions about Credit by Portfolio or Skills Assessment for individual courses, email the department contact named below.
The following UD courses are under discussion or review for future Credit by Portfolio or Skills assessment. All newly approved courses will be added to this page - check back for updates.

To approve a UD course as eligible for Portfolio or Skills Assessment
A department chair emails registrar-cpl@udel.edu from their udel.edu account confirming departmental approval of the following (include everything below for each course):
UD course and credits
Whether students demonstrate mastery of knowledge via a Portfolio or Skills review
What students must provide for the assessment
A rubric for the assessment (including minimum proficiency required for credit)
A designated departmental contact person who will work directly with interested students
The Registrar’s Office will review the information outlined by the chair, address questions/concerns, store the approval for official reference, and contact departments every 5 years to confirm renewal. Courses approved for this type of CPL are valid for at least one full academic year. Department approval may be removed at any time before the start of the next academic year.
The Registrar’s Office will build the approved CPL credits in UDSIS and publish relevant information to include the eligible courses, credits earned, requirements, an overview of the rubric, whom to contact in the department, and when credits would post to a student record.
How students request Portfolio or Skills Assessment & what departments do to approve it
To request Portfolio or Skills Assessment, matriculated students do the two steps outlined in the Student section above (quick summary below). Students must initiate the request in writing. They do this at any time after the first day of their first UD semester.
Form: Submit a College Approval to Transfer Credit (CATC form - available Fall 2027) which routes through their Asst. Dean for approval before arriving at the Registrar’s Office.
Email: Send an official request from their udel.edu account to the department contact for the specific State of Delaware Pathway.
As Asst. Dean would not deny a CATC form. The forms are used to keep advisors informed, confirm a student’s understanding of eligibility and fees, and provide details needed for Registrar processing.
The academic department schedules an appointment with the student to review materials and/or proctor an exam.
Once completed, the department contact emails each individual matriculated student from their udel.edu account to notify them of final approval, copying the Registrar’s Office (registrar-cpl@udel.edu) on the full email thread, including attachments provided by the department, unit, and/or student. The email should include the following:
Forwarded copy of the student’s original request
Student name, UDID, and term matriculated to UD
UD course # earned (per what is published in the Student section)
Date assessment completed, and by whom
Final steps
The Registrar’s Office will:
“Match” the department’s confirmation with the approved CATC form and save both as part of the student's official record.
Post credits and bill the non-refundable $75 per credit fee in September (for Fall), February (for Winter/Spring), and June (for Summer).
The academic department serves as the primary contact for their CPL opportunities.
