CREDIT FOR PRIOR LEARNING (CPL)

UD recognizes that students may acquire knowledge through professional experience or other modes of non-college-credit instruction, equivalent to the knowledge obtained through completion of Undergraduate or Graduate credit-bearing courses. Matriculated students may be eligible to earn academic credit for some noncredit exams, courses or credentials through Credit for Prior Learning (CPL).

The UD CPL process is administered by the Office of the Registrar in collaboration with academic departments/colleges. Every type of CPL has its own policies regarding associated fees, expiration dates, and whether it satisfies Credit-Hour-in-Residence requirements (also called Residency requirements - not to be confused with Residency for Tuition Purposes).

Individual academic departments follow a proposal and approval process to determine which noncredit exams, courses or credentials are eligible for UD college credit through CPL, as well as the steps students need to do to earn it. Each academic department is the primary contact for their CPL opportunities. See the linked buttons below for detailed information and lists of currently approved programs.

Note that UD does not award CPL for professional education programs offered by companies or third-party providers that have not been evaluated by ACE.
