Donald L. Sparks Distinguished Lectureship in Soil and Environmental Sciences

In 2023, UC Berkeley Prof. Mary Firestone addressed belowground dynamics of recently fixed plant carbon in a California annual grassland. Plant roots and the organisms that surround them are the primary source for stabilized soil organic carbon (SOC). This characteristic of the terrestrial C cycle is critical to C storage, soil water holding capacity, nutrient provision, and the management of soil health.

Donald L. Sparks Distinguished Lectureship in Soil and Environmental Sciences

Kansas State University Prof. M.B. Kirkham dove deep into microplastics, a major source of pollutants in soil and marine ecosystems. Specifically, she covered the impact on plant-water relations and cadmium uptake. Microplastics in the aquatic environment have been widely studied, but microplastics in the terrestrial environment have been less studied. Kirkham emphasized the lack of information exists concerning the water relations of plants grown in soil with microplastics.

Challenges in American Agriculture: Trade, Water and Labor

Ed Kee, our college's executive in residence, led a discussion centered on farms, food, energy and the environment from the perspective of agricultural science leaders. Rancher Kim Brackett educated the audience on regenerative agriculture in the cattle industries. Four-generation John Chandler detailed his experiences in shaping of agricultural legislation, including raising local water agency involvement in the California legislature.
