Make Homeowners Insurance Part of Your Annual Financial Review

September 02, 2026 Written by: Kelly Sipple, Extension Agent in Health & Well-Being Financial Literacy

Your homeowner’s insurance should not be treated as a "set it and forget it" expense. Review your policy at least once a year, and whenever you make significant changes to your home or belongings.

Make sure your coverage is sufficient to rebuild your home at current construction costs, rather than simply reflecting its market value. Keep an updated inventory of your home and possessions, and store important insurance documents and records in a secure, easily accessible location.

Most importantly, understand your home's risks, know your policy's exclusions, and address coverage gaps before a disaster occurs. Your home is one of your most valuable assets. Taking time to understand and regularly review your homeowner’s insurance can help protect both your property and your financial well-being. Besides keeping your coverage up to date, you can also find ways to make your policy more cost-effective.

Ways to Manage Insurance Costs

Homeowners can take several steps to potentially reduce insurance costs while maintaining appropriate protection. During your annual review, shop around and compare policies, inquire about available discounts, and consider whether raising your deductible is appropriate for your financial situation. Ask your insurance provider about bundling homeowners, life, and auto insurance, as this may also provide a discount.

Certain home improvements may help reduce risk and, in some cases, qualify you for discounts. Ask your insurer about improvements such as updated plumbing or electrical systems, smoke detectors, security systems, and other protective devices. Some insurers also offer discounts based on factors like a smoke-free home, group membership, or military service. Additionally, your home's location can influence premiums; for instance, proximity to a fire hydrant or fire station may lower insurance costs. When managing insurance premiums, every discount helps.

Reviewing your homeowner’s insurance annually helps keep your home and belongings protected. Taking a few minutes to check your coverage can save you money and provide peace of mind.
