National Take Back Day
April 15, 2026 Written by: Lindsay Hughes, 4-H Youth Development Extension Agent
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a way to provide a safe way to dispose of unused prescriptions and educate the public about possible abuse of medication. Unused or expired medications can end up in the wrong hands, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose, and drug abuse. Medications that are thrown in the trash can be taken out or abused. Prescriptions flushed down the toilet can contaminate the water supply. Most teens get unused prescriptions from family and friends' medicine cabinets.
National Prescription Take Back Day is April 25, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. Do you have any unneeded medication sitting around your house? Keep them safe. Clean them out. Take them back. Dispose of your unneeded or expired prescriptions, no questions. Use the link below to find out the collection site near you.
If there is not a Take Back location available to you, take the medication out of the bottle, mix with unused kitty litter or coffee grounds, seal the bag and dispose of them.
