HEAR FROM OUR STUDENTS

This is who we are

Students and faculty at UD strive to make the world a more just place to live, protect the environment, design a new tomorrow, and keep our community safe. What we do is what makes us Blue Hens.

I chose UD because they have one of the best chemistry departments in our country, and within the first two months of my freshman year, I was able to get involved in research.

Luke Coster, biochemistry major at UD received the 2024 American Chemical Society Delaware Section Award and conducted advanced protein research to combat cellular stress. With plans to pursue a Ph.D. and eventually lead his own research lab, Luke exemplifies the Blue Hen spirit of curiosity and innovation.

What drew me in was the collaborative environment here. I’ve never felt like I had to compete with anyone to get ahead, and that has really made all the difference in my college experience.

Nivedita first came to campus to interview for the prestigious Distinguished Scholars award, which is an invite-only scholarship offered to students admitted to the Honors College.

Nivedita Prabhu fell in love with UD when she first visited Newark to be interviewed for the Honors College’s Distinguished Scholars award.

“It was pretty much everything I wanted,” she said. “I really liked the honors experience and I liked that it’s such a big school, but it felt small and welcoming at the same time.”

I found UD and the art conservation program, and I immediately committed.

- Riley Coates

Riley Coates, an art conservation major in UD’s College of Arts and Sciences, is an active member of the Academic Competition Club and serves as the Social Media Manager for T.E.A.L, a student organization supporting those with dietary restrictions and food insecurity. After graduation, she plans to pursue a graduate degree and hopes to move to a big city.

Everything I learned in the classroom and at clinicals applies daily to player preparation and injury evaluation. Without UD’s athletic training program, I would not be in the position I am today. I owe so much to that program.

Feldman and Diaz credit UD for helping them break into the highly competitive world of professional football.

Marco Diaz, 2021 graduate of the College of Health Sciences, works alongside fellow Blue Hen Steve Feldman, the Eagles rehabilitation coordinator. Feldman, a Newark native, graduated from UD’s athletic training education program and later obtained his doctorate of physical therapy from UD.

Isabella Haigney and Grace Mahony

Everything I care about and everything that’s important to me is because of UD. The career opportunities that I have, the incredible friends that I have, the memories that are going to stick with me for the rest of my life, I wouldn’t have if I didn't come here.

- Grace Mahony

Grace Mahony (right) used her time at UD to follow her passions. As a World Scholar, Mahony has had the opportunity to study abroad three times, in Rome, Copenhagen and Budapest. These experiences ignited her interest in international affairs, especially in international conflict negotiation and peacebuilding.

Isabella Haigney (left) drew on her personal experience to improve the lives of others at UD, especially those with disabilities. In addition to her activism and leadership on campus, Haigney sought ways to turn her passion for disability advocacy into a career, interning with Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living, Gov. John Carney’s legal council and Community Legal Service Aid Inc.
