Decoding rice roots

Frank Linam, a plant and soil sciences doctoral student at the University of Delaware, is studying how the wet soil conditions in flooded rice paddies affect the way the roots take in nutrients and filter out toxins. Linam found that the plaque successfully holds onto the arsenic in various environments and soil types so that it doesn’t make it into the roots.

Graduate student Laura Taylor is testing a new approach to encourage coordination between adjacent homeowners who have become eligible for a flood-related buyout. Full participation in coastal buyouts can protect homeowners from repeated and severe flood risk and restore floodplain functionality. Working with UD Prof. Christina McGranaghan, Taylor conducts her economic experiments at UD’s Center for Experimental and Applied Economics (CEAE). Taylor is funded by the Delaware Sea Grant and a Graduate Research Enhancement Grant from Gerald J. Mangone Climate Change Science and Policy Hub.
Reviving bobwhite quail

University of Delaware faculty and students, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, are spearheading the restoration of bobwhite quail populations in Pennsylvania. After their extinction due to changes in land use, efforts centered at the Letterkenny Army Depot in Franklin County are focused on reintroducing the species to its native habitat.

Jeff Buler is taking an undergraduate class of 42 wildlife ecology students down state for a field trip hosted by DNREC to learn about grassland habitat management and conducting a prescribed burn at Cedar Swamp Wildlife Management Area near Smyrna. Our hosts will include many past UD alum, including the DNREC Environmental Program Manager (Craig Rhoads-doing the explanation at the fire), the DNREC Regional Wildlife Manager (Eric Ludwig-explaining how they will start the fire), 4 former UD students who now work as wildlife technicians for DNREC, and other UD alum as well. University of Delaware students enrolled in AGRI 130 spent their third Saturday field trip driving specialized farm equipment (combine and tractor) equipped with precision agriculture. With prices exceeding in some cases more than three-quarters of a million dollars, it was a unique hands-on experience.
