Meet our 2023 participants and learn about the undergraduate research they did while studying at the University of Delaware during over the summer.

Bio: Gabrielle Bannister is a University of Delaware student studying pre-veterinary medicine with an animal nutrition minor. Working in Dr. Biddle's lab, she is investigating the relationship between cyathostomin infection and levels of antibodies in horse feces and saliva.
Bio: Evan Bletz is a recent Environmental Science graduate of F&M College. Working in Dr. Inamdar's lab, he is looking at soil health in areas of flood plain restoration in Maryland and Southern Virginia.
Bio: Kevin Chan is a UD plant science student working inDr. Donofrio's lab. In his project, he is studying microbial interactions between a strain of bacteria against other economically important pathogens.
Bio: Grace Chen is an Environmental Science major from UC-Berkley. Working in Dr. Michael Crossley's lab, she is working on Agricultural Entomology. Her project concerns the relationship between black sulfur flies and parasitic worms.
Bio: Mariela is a rising junior at Iowa State University majoring in Microbiology and Geology. She is sponsored through the CANR Summer Institute and is being mentored by Dr. Erin Sparks and graduate student Jingjing Tong in Plant and Soil Sciences. She is studying the use of protoplast fusion for generating transgenic maize plants.
Bio: Safiyya is a rising junior at the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Genetics and Genomics. She is sponsored through the CANR Summer Institute and is being mentored by Dr. Erin Sparks in Plant and Soil Sciences. She is studying genetic variants of maize plants.
Bio: Nia is a rising junior at the University of Delaware majoring in Pre-Veterinary Medicine and Animal Biosciences and Agriculture and Natural Sciences. She is sponsored through the UD Envision Program and is being mentored by Dr. Amy Biddle. Nia’s project focuses on the study of gastric ulcers in standard bred racehorses.
Bio: Yuki is a rising senior at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore where she majors in Plant Science. She is sponsored through UD Envision and is working with Dr. Alyssa Koehler on studying the prevalence of Pythium infestation in root crops of southern Delaware.
Bio: Kadisha is a native of the West Indies and is a rising sophomore at Howard University where she majors in Environmental Science with minors in Computer Science and Economics. She is sponsored through the CANR Summer Institute and is being mentored by Dr. Changqing Wu where she is studying the prevalence of plastics in many of our foods.
Bio: Bukola Molake is a Biology major with a Environmental Science minor at UMBC working in Dr. Michael Crossley's lab focusing on Agricultural Entomology. Her project will look at the behavior of darkling beetles and mealworms.
Bio: Emilia is a rising senior at the University Delaware majoring in Plant Science with minors in Environmental Soil Science and Statistical Data Analytics. She is sponsored through the grant funding and is being mentored by Dr. Erin Sparks in Plant and Soil Sciences. She is studying nitrogen uptake by maize brace roots.
Bio: Jacqueline Rima is a UD Animal Bio Science major also pursuing a health certificate. Working in Dr. Dutta's animal science lab, her project will utilize samples from chicken ovarian follicles and use coding to sequence RNA.
Bio: Lauren Schechter is a UD student majoring in Environmental Science. She is working in Dr. Jin's soil physics lab, and her project will measure dissolved phosphorus of colloidal soil fractions in. marshland environment.
Bio: Yasmine Skalli is a Social and Environmental Geography major attending The Ohio State University. Under the guidance of Dr. Parcells and Dr. Williams, she is working on communications for UD Envision and for the office of sustainability.
Bio: Nicholas is a rising junior at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore where he majors in Agricultural Business and Management. He is being sponsored through the UD Envision program and is being mentored by Abby Reeves in sustainable farming practices in UD’s Fresh to You produce program.
Bio: Chase is a rising sophomore at the University of Maryland, College Park where she majors in Environmental Stewardship. She is being sponsored through the UD Envision program and is being mentored by Abby Reeves in sustainable farming practices in UD’s Fresh to You produce program.
