Dr. Michelle Rodgers, director of UD Cooperative Extension is thrilled to announce my participation in this year's Delaware State Fair Pig Kissing Contest and fundraiser!

Sponsored by the Delaware 4-H Foundation, this contest raises funds to provide scholarships for the fair's Junior Exhibitors!

As you can see, she hasn't been lucky enough to kiss a pig yet—but you can help her kiss the pig later this summer by raising $3,000 for this wonderful cause. Every contribution counts!

Let's work together to support our youth!

About the Foundation

The Delaware 4-H Foundation was established in 1978 to help raise money and in-kind gifts to support the Delaware 4-H Program. The Foundation now provides over $75,000 each year in five areas, such as Awards, Trips, and Scholarships. Private donations from businesses, investment earnings, and non-profit grants are solicited for these areas. The Foundation strives to enhance and expand educational opportunities for Delaware's 4-H youth and build relationships with supporters committed to long-term support.

From the development of rudimentary tools to today’s cutting-edge machinery, technological innovation in agriculture has steadily improved the efficiency of food and livestock production. Tools such as reapers, sickles, animal-drawn plows, seed drills, threshing machines, and a host of others from the early ages helped transform farming practices, with newer technology evolving from earlier ones or ideas. Even though tractors have come to symbolize mechanized agriculture, more advanced equipment, such as combines, has been part of the agricultural landscape over the past two centuries, further pushing the frontiers of what is possible on the farm.

Salty soils are causing reduced crop density, lower yields and barren lands unable to sustain crop growth. Sea level rise, intense storm surges and the overextraction of groundwater are driving this increasing salinity in coastal farmlands throughout the Delmarva region.
