Communications

Working with colleagues throughout the Office of Communications and Marketing and across the campus, the editorial team produces UDaily, the University’s online news source, and provides content for a variety of media, including print publications, websites and other communications. OCM works closely with administrative leadership to effectively drive communications and marketing strategy. Our primary areas of focus include: UDaily, UD Magazine, Research Communications, College Communications, Leadership Communications, Admissions and Special Projects.

UDAILY

The University of Delaware’s online news source, UDaily’s mission is to tell the most significant, interesting and timely stories from across the University and reach the widest possible audience on campus and around the world.

UDaily serves as an interactive communications platform for engagement with the University, using stories, photographs, video and illustrations to connect the University’s colleges, institutes and programs to a wide audience. That audience includes current and prospective students and their families, as well as faculty, staff, alumni, friends, partners, donors, external media and community leaders around the world.

Story ideas can be sent to ocm@udel.edu with “UDaily story idea” in the subject line. Faculty members should reach out to their college’s communications director to determine the best way to share research or faculty news.

Types of UDaily articles

UDaily’s primary function is to post news and feature stories at udel.edu/udaily. Articles clearly explain innovative research; highlight student, faculty, alumni and staff achievement; and demonstrate UD’s participation in local and global communities.

Features must include the following:

  • Insight and impact on an institutional level

  • Visually compelling assets for storytelling to broader audiences

  • Writing that is reader-friendly for a broad audience and not overly scientific or complex

  • Be timely for UDaily and external media placement

The UDaily editor, OCM staff and campus communicators will collaborate to choose the most significant, interesting and timely stories that highlight people and programs that are emblematic of UD’s overall excellence. Planning matters, starting when ideas are conceived. The process continues with great writing, captivating photography, video, graphics and social media tools that draw readers and bring to life people and their ideas. UDaily and OCM reserve the authority to leverage editorial expertise to decide if or when to publish content to maximize the impact of telling the story of the University.

UDaily produces a weekly newsletter for subscribers who opt in. Anyone can subscribe, including faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni and community members. The newsletter is sent every Friday at 6 a.m. and includes news and feature stories from the past week. It also includes external media highlights, social media highlights, videos, information about upcoming events and Inside UD stories. Subscribe at udel.edu/udaily/subscribe.

For the Record provides information about recent professional activities and honors of UD faculty, staff, students and alumni. It is posted on udel.edu/udaily every Friday. For the Record submissions should be sent to ocm@udel.edu with “For the Record” in the subject line. Submissions should be 150 words or less.

Articles that appear on Inside UD have a narrow focus on information about a college/institute/program and are geared to a narrower, more internal audience. Examples of Inside UD articles include parking notices, training opportunities, colloquiums, panel discussions, summer intern roundups, program wrap-ups, IT technical updates, etc.

In Memoriams, including UDaily articles, links to unit articles and external obituaries, are posted at udel.edu/udaily/memoriam.

UDaily staff writers or college communicators will write a UDaily article for current faculty, staff and students, if one is desired by the family.

External obituaries for retired UD faculty and staff can be linked on the In Memoriam page. UDaily articles about retired faculty members and notable UD alumni and community members are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

To submit an alumni obituary for inclusion in a future issue of UD Magazine, please complete the following form: https://inmemoriam.udel.edu/.

UD MAGAZINE

The UD Magazine highlights stories of UD strength, tradition, innovation and impact. Published two times per year, it aims to educate, engage and inspire. The Magazine (formerly known as The Messenger) reaches UD alumni, parents of current students, donors and friends of the University, engaging a broad readership through the unique stories that distinguish the University and its Blue Hen community.

UD alumni are encouraged to send their news with fellow Blue Hens for inclusion in Class Notes, a popular section of each issue. A new job, a promotion, a personal or professional award...they're all accomoplishments we want to announce. Email a note or a press release to magazine@udel.edu. Please include your hometown, graduation year and college or major.

The Delaware-themed special edition of UD Magazine is a smaller, 24-page publication highlighting UD’s statewide impact. Mailed annually to in-state constituents, it spotlights the university’s mission to create a stronger, healthier, cleaner, greener, more vibrant, innovative, and educated state. RESEARCH COMMUNICATIONS

The Research Communications team is OCM’s strategic partner to the Research Office. We work in close collaboration with college communications teams to elevate UD’s profile as a nationally recognized Research 1 (R1) university. Together, we amplify the reach and impact of UD’s research enterprise — highlighting the people, discoveries, innovations, major grants, awards and facilities that drive scientific progress and societal benefit.

Have research news to share? Please reach out to your college or unit communications team (if you have one), a member of the Research Communications team, and/or email ocm@udel.edu

What We Do

Collaborate with college communications teams in the publication of research news on UDaily, spotlighting discoveries, innovations, new institutes, major grants and scholarly achievements.

Produce internal biweekly federal funding updates and a monthly research newsletter to keep the UD research community informed and engaged.

Manage communications for major research events, including UD Day in D.C.Inventors RecognitionUniversity-wide research symposia and public STEM events with nationally known speakers.

Present communications workshops that help UD researchers connect their work to broader audiences with clarity and impact.

Play a leadership role in URMA, the professional development association for research communicators, and serve as the University’s communications liaison with federal research agency communicators.
