General Student Advocacy and Support Groups

PURPOSE

Empathic Peers Offering Wisdom, Encouragement and Resources (EmPOWER) is a College of Earth, Ocean and Environment (CEOE) program to provide guidance and promote mental health and wellness among Earth, Oceanand Environment graduate students at both the Newark and Lewes campuses. EmPOWER’s activities include a graduate student mentoring network, where senior and first-year students in each department are paired to create a support system for first-year students and provide mentoring opportunities for senior students. At the department, and as needed campus, level, EmPOWER hosts monthly de-stressing events, such as movie nights, craft making and hikes, as well as personal development workshops. EmPOWER also organizes CEOE-wide social events and workshops focused on professional development. The role of EmPOWER is to mentor new students and help them navigate academic and community support resources. For example, peer mentors could point mentees to academic directors or the assistant dean for graduate students for academic needs or mental health professionals and housing resources for community support.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES

EmPOWER’s goal is to support CEOE graduate students by providing peer mentors and resources to assist all CEOE students in surviving and thriving in graduate school, including de-stressing events, personal and professional development opportunities, and mentorship. The role of EmPOWER is to mentor new students and help them navigate academic and community support resources, while fostering a strong network of support and care within CEOE departments.

HELPING THE UD COMMUNITY

It is our goal that CEOE EmPOWER will help assist incoming graduate students as they make the transition from undergraduate education and/or working to graduate school. This will better prepare them for success in their graduate career at UD. Further, in developing a network of support and care, students will have access to, or given direction toward, individuals and resources to promote better mental health and self-care practices, providing a foundation for building better systems of self and communal care among graduate students.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

Incoming graduate students will have access to a mentor, or mentors, to help guide them through their first year in their respective program, as well as increased opportunities to participate in professional development and stress-relieving activities. In addition, students in at least their second year will be provided mentoring and leadership opportunities.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP

Members can join CEOE EmPOWER through two avenues – as a mentee or as a peer mentor. Mentees are first-year students in their respective graduate program and have the option to join EmPOWER upon the start of their graduate program. Peer mentors are at least second-year students and can apply to be a peer mentor through their department or campus lead mentor. Applications are solicited in the spring/summer for the next academic year. There are no dues.

PURPOSE

Empathic Peers Offering Wisdom, Encouragement and Resources (EmPOWER) is a College of Engineering (COE) initiative to promote mental health and wellness among engineering graduate students. EmPOWER’s activities include a graduate student mentoring network, where senior and junior students in each department are paired to create a support system for junior students and provide mentoring opportunities for senior students. At the department level, EmPOWER hosts monthly de-stressing events, such as movie nights, craft making, and hikes, as well as personal development workshops. EmPOWER also organizes CoE-wide social events and workshops focused on professional development.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES

EmPOWER’s goal is to support CoE graduate students by providing de-stressing events, safe spaces, personal and professional development opportunities and peer mentors to assist all CoE students in surviving and thriving in graduate school.

HELPING THE UD COMMUNITY

In pairing senior student peer mentors with first-year student mentees, EmPOWER provides a built-in peer-support network in each engineering department that didn’t previously exist. This mentorship program facilitates the first year student’s transition into their graduate studies with the goals of improving student retention, improving knowledge of available University resources and promoting balance between laboratory and class demands. The de-stressing events hosted by EmPOWER cater to a breadth of student interests, such as outdoor exploration, arts/culture, cinema and board games, and contribute toward the vibrant and inclusive culture at UD. Moreover, EmPOWER’s professional/personal development programming will provide students with the skills to improve their self-care and to manage the increasing demands of graduate and post-graduate life. Social events will enhance the graduate student experience and promote cross-departmental conversations and networking.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

At the department level, first-year graduate students benefit from the built-in support network EmPOWER provides by assigning each of them a dedicated senior student peer mentor. Likewise, senior student peer mentors benefit from the opportunity to be a mentor in a professional setting, a key skill set in all career paths, including industry and academia. Students within each department will also have access to monthly de-stressing events, such as hiking, painting, book club and board game night, hosted by their departmental EmPOWER branch.

At both the department and COE levels, all students will benefit from personal/professional development workshops on topics such as workspace ergonomics, resume writing, public speaking, personal finances and mindfulness, which will be hosted by anywhere from one department to the COE-wide EmPOWER based on workshop type. EmPOWER will host one or two CoE-wide social or personal development events per semester,  such as a coffee hour, ice cream social or mixer, to promote interdepartmental conversations and facilitate student networking outside of their home departments.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP

Any first-year student in the College of Engineering automatically becomes a member of his/her department’s EmPOWER program as a mentee in the mentorship program.

In order to become a peer mentor, the student must be at least a second-year actively enrolled graduate student. He/she must obtain five signatures of support from peers or colleagues in the respective department and write a short statement describing why he/she would like to become a peer mentor. With the submission of these documents and approval of the department’s lead mentor, the student can then become a peer mentor.

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Psychology Mentorship and Community Network is to provide mentorship opportunities and facilitate community-building for graduate students in the Psychological and Brain Sciences department at the University of Delaware.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES

Peer mentorship, friendship, and community are important for graduate students to succeed. A sense of community and strong social relationships are important for the mental health and well-being of graduate students. Formal and informal mentorship is also important in helping graduate students achieve success. Peer mentors can share resources, provide support, and answer questions that incoming or early-career students may be hesitant to ask of their faculty advisor.

By formally creating the Psychology Mentorship and Community Network, we can facilitate a peer mentorship network and organize community-building events that may not otherwise occur organically. These relationships and events will provide valuable knowledge and social resources to early-career students and facilitate a stronger and happier community among Psychological and Brain Sciences graduate students more broadly.

This past summer, students organized the mentorship program and connected incoming students with current peer mentors. Going forward, tangible goals of the program include:

  1. The maintenance of these mentoring relationships across the 2021-2022 academic year (evinced by ensuring mentors and mentees are meeting regularly and all mentees are happy with their mentorship)
  2. The organization of at least two formal events for all mentors, mentees, and other psychology graduate students to gather for shared community and informal mentorship opportunities
  3. The organization of a list of “ad-hoc” mentors, including students who have expertise in certain mentorship areas (e.g., preparation for teaching-oriented positions, statistics knowledge), who are able to meet with incoming or early-career students about specific topics
  4. The creation of a strategic plan for continuing and improving the program for the 2022-2023 academic year.

HELPING THE UD COMMUNITY

Should the Psychology Mentorship and Community Network become a registered GSO, the group will benefit the broader University of Delaware community in three key ways.

  1. The most direct benefits will be to psychology graduate students. Those involved in mentor-mentee relationships will likely reap the greatest benefits by building positive social relationships. Mentees will also benefit directly by the acquisition of institutional knowledge and resources provided by the mentors, whereas the mentors will benefit by practicing mentorship, a skill not often taught yet necessary for success in a future academic career. More broadly, psychology graduate students who can join formal Psychology Mentorship and Community Network events will benefit by building community and engaging in informal mentorship.
  2. The faculty and staff in the Psychological and Brain Sciences will also benefit from a formalized mentorship program. Faculty are charged with providing holistic mentorship to their students, despite the fact that much knowledge about success in graduate school might be best understood and transmitted from current students. Staff must annually communicate department norms and procedures to new students, with many opportunities for misunderstandings and confusion. Peer mentorship directly benefits faculty and staff by reducing the burden on faculty and staff to orient new and early-career students to the department.
  3. Finally, the entirety of the University of Delaware community may benefit when a subset of the students (i.e., Psychology graduate students) are happier in their current role, more knowledgeable about how to utilize resources and meet the demands of their graduate program, and more integrated into their community. Benefits of the mentorship program may particularly impact undergraduate students in psychology labs or taking psychology taught or TA-ed by graduate students, who can reap mentorship from a more knowledgeable and integrated class of graduate students.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

As stated above, benefits to the individual members will likely be in three forms:

  1. Mentees will benefit from learning about the department and how to succeed in graduate school, having a designated mentor to ask questions to, and otherwise gaining valuable institutional knowledge and mentorship about the process of earning a graduate degree in Psychological and Brain Sciences.
  2. Mentors will benefit from providing mentorship, a key skill for a future career in academia that is not often taught. Mentors also often enjoy providing mentorship, in part evinced by the fact that far more current students volunteered to serve as a mentor during this first year of the program than were needed.
  3. Finally, all graduate students in the program, including those who are incoming student mentees, current student mentors, or those joining informal community building events or who volunteer to be listed as an “ad-hoc” mentor with particular expertise, will benefit from building community and friendships with their peers. These benefits may be largest for new students, those from historically underrepresented backgrounds, and those struggling to form community during graduate school for numerous potential reasons (e.g., students experiencing a poor social climate in their primary lab, those who are commuting, etc.). Notably, students from underrepresented backgrounds or with historically underrepresented identities in terms of racial/ethnic, gender, disability status, age, nationality, or socioeconomic status often feel a lack of belonging in graduate programs. Building community and providing opportunities to connect with peers, including on shared characteristics and experiences, may provide the greatest benefits for these individuals.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP

Membership requires that individuals are graduate students in the department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. No dues are required.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICERS

Any current graduate student (second-year or above) in the department of Psychological and Brain Sciences can hold office.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

As members of this group, individuals enjoy greater access to campus performing venues, and more chances to perform for the University community.

PURPOSE

The GSCA shall serve as a forum for the purpose of:

  1. fostering social engagement between cohorts, disciplines, research interests, and communities,
  2. providing mentoring and career development for graduate students, and
  3. facilitating research teams and overseeing graduate-led research projects.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES

We envision three main goals and objectives for this student organization. The first of these is to foster social engagement between cohorts, disciplines, research interests, and communities. One of our focal points as an organization will be to build social engagement among graduate students, in turn, providing a strong cultural foundation for the department in maintaining morale, while also aiding in the recruitment of prospective students. Our second goal will be to provide mentoring and career development opportunities for graduate students. In addition to the mentoring from the department, we want to provide peer mentoring for graduate students, especially new students (both MA and PhD). Finally, we want to facilitate graduate-led social scientific research by allowing students to propose studies, form research teams, workshop ideas, and practice presentations.

HELPING THE UD COMMUNITY

The UD Graduate College advocates for the creation of an "intellectually, culturally and socially diverse educational community". Our goals and objectives of an organization serve to fulfill this mission. By facilitating social scientific research, we are providing important skills for scholars -- both in academia and private industry. Moreover, by fostering social engagement among cohorts and disciplines, we hope to create a culturally and socially diverse graduate student body. Most importantly, as members of a new PhD program, we find it prudent to have an outlet for graduate students which we hope can both assist in retention efforts and recruitment efforts for our department and the University of Delaware.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

Just like our goals as an organization, there are three main benefits for graduate student members. First, our organization will provide a space for graduate students to engage with other students. We believe that one element of success at the graduate level is maintaining social relationships with members of the cohort. This can be difficult given class schedules, work schedules, and other factors. However, having an additional outlet to foster these relationships will provide students with more opportunities to engage with graduate students within the department. Second, members will have mentoring opportunities (both as mentors themselves or as mentees) and career development opportunities (e.g., CV construction, teaching materials, research practice, etc.) With so many of our graduate students conducting research independently, presenting at conferences, and entering the job market, we believe we have the ability to provide important and relevant mentoring for incoming students. Finally, one of the most -- if not the most -- important functions of a graduate program is to conduct research. Our organization wants to provide a space for individuals to lead research projects and teams themselves, helping build up the skills necessary for both industry and academic research jobs.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICERS

All Officers must be full-time matriculated graduate students at the University of Delaware with a minimum GPA of 2.25. It is the recommendation of the GSCA founders that any potential officer must be able to complete a full academic calendar year in their elected role (i.e., no second-semester seniors, semester abroad students), though this recommendation does not bar a student’s participation, nomination, or election to such a role.

PURPOSE

The Graduate Student Group in Asian Studies is united by shared cross-disciplinary commitments to historical and contemporary issues in Asian studies and Asia-related subjects, and to function with respect to diversity and inclusion. Our shared interests include, but are not limited to, historical interpretations of Asia and Asian people, languages, laws, anthropology, cultural heritage, migration and refugees, international relations, and career advancement in Asia-related opportunities, both within the United States and abroad. Our primary missions are to represent and advocate graduate students of such interests, providing a safe and informal yet scholarly productive platform to communicate and optimize their interdisciplinary experiences.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Our group is united by shared cross-disciplinary commitments to historical and contemporary issues in Asian studies and Asia-related subjects. Our shared interests include historical interpretations of Asia and Asian people, languages, laws, anthropology, cultural heritage, migration and refugees, international relations, and career advancement in Asia-related opportunities, both within the United States and abroad. Our primary mission is to represent and advocate for graduate students with shared interests, providing a safe, unofficial, yet scholarly platform to communicate and optimize their interdisciplinary experiences.

HELPING THE UD COMMUNITY

The broader University community benefits from the GSGAS through the enhanced visibility of graduate students in diverse disciplines and their interdisciplinary activities. Each department with graduate students who are members of the GSGAS will be invited to participate in both informal and formal events. Our effort to cross disciplinary boundaries and advocate for graduate students in Asian Studies will allow new resources and activities to reach the broader audience of UD.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

In our daily operations, the GSGAS functions as a hub for members to meet and exchange scholarly ideas and, when possible, collaborate to generate interdisciplinary extracurricular activities. Active members of the GSGAS will acquire and demonstrate collective growth of creativity through cross-disciplinary encounters and interactions. These benefits, in return, will allow us to complete graduate research projects at UD and to be part of the broader academic world with a strong foundation and comprehensive understanding of Asia and our respective academic disciplines.

Graduate student members of the GSGAS will engage in interdisciplinary activities, exchange viewpoints, and hold conversations with members from other disciplines, to better understand Asia and the broader practices in Asian Studies. We are confident that the graduate student members will be able to explore different perspectives and methods, find and gain access to new resources, and develop their research with innovative approaches. The GSGAS will also help graduate student members to build a network beyond their respective disciplines and discover career-advancement opportunities.

PURPOSE

HGSA advocates for the interests of graduate students within, while aiming to foster a broader appreciation of history beyond the Department of History at the University of Delaware. HGSA serves to offer opportunities for professional development, organize social events, open avenues for peer mentoring and knowledge-sharing among graduate students, foster community, and promote the historical discipline across UD and among the general public. It further stands to offer a collective representative body for graduate students in the history department, which will champion cooperation between faculty and graduate students on departmental issues, including decision-making in relation to curriculum and instruction, issues concerning prospective changes to the graduate program, and the role of graduate students within the department.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

HGSA will provide opportunities for professional development by organizing and hosting seminars dedicated to teaching and job preparation. HGSA will organize events in order to foster community among graduate students and provide peer support. HGSA will host a Graduate Student Conference, which will be interdisciplinary and open to graduate students within and beyond UD; paper workshops, in which members will discuss the work of their peers and provide feedback; and an annual speaker series, in which members will invite academics and cultural figures (one per semester) from the area to discuss their work with the UD community.

HGSA will provide a collective voice to represent the history department’s graduate students. As a collective representative of the department’s graduate students, HGSA will ensure graduate students play a larger role in department decision-making processes and promise a cooperative relationship between graduate students and faculty. HGSA will also provide graduate students with a route through which to express their concerns with and visions for the history department’s degree programs. Board members will share HGSA contact information with prospective, incoming, and current graduate students in order to establish a formal outlet for student input. HGSA board members will communicate student input to the history department’s faculty and staff through two graduate student representatives, standardizing the process of addressing student proposals and concerns.

HELPING THE UD COMMUNITY

While HGSA stands to serve students within the Department of History, in doing so, it also intends to benefit the University community at large. The strength of the graduate program in history at UD reflects UD’s position as a robust research community. A strong HGSA will help to attract candidates to the history program at UD by exhibiting the department’s cooperative environment and will highlight both its and the university’s strengths. HGSA’s efforts to ensure a healthy relationship between faculty and graduate students serves to strengthen the university’s commitment to professional development as a part of graduate studies and may serve as a model for other departments. Moreover, the University of Delaware will benefit from HGSA's efforts to foster a graduate community that bridges departments, including the Music department, the Anthropology department, and the English department. Looking beyond the Department of History, HGSA will strengthen a professional community among graduate students at UD through its interdisciplinary conferences and events.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP

Members must be graduate students at the University of Delaware. There are no dues.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this organization is to foster communication between students, faculty and leadership within the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences, ensure representation (and advocate on behalf of) of the HDFS graduate students through participation in graduate governments, foster graduate student professional development and build the HDFS community.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES

Communication
The HDFS-GA will “regularly” hold meetings with HDFS graduate students to hear perspectives and communicate departmental policies, and HDFS-GA leadership will “regularly” meet with HDFS departmental leadership. The frequency of these meetings will be determined by the organization and departmental leadership within the first year of the organization's forming.

Representation

  • At the University level, the HDFS-GA will work with the Graduate Student Government (GSG) to ensure an HDFS representative is elected to their governing body.
  • At the college level, the HDFS-GA will work with the Education Graduate Association (EGA) to ensure an HDFS graduate student(s) is represented on its governing body.
  • The HDFS-GA will also function as a mechanism for ensuring HDFS graduate students are represented on other departmental, college or University-level organizations/committees where appropriate.

Professional Development

The HDFS-GA will be responsible for organizing professional development opportunities. These opportunities will be targeted to the needs of HDFS graduate students but will be open to faculty, staff and other graduate students within and outside of the department. Each year, the HDFS-GA will have a volunteer Brown Bag subcommittee, tasked with sustaining the HDFS Brown Bag series. Faculty may be asked (or volunteer) to consult or assist in the planning of Brown Bag events as appropriate. When possible, and as appropriate, the HDFS-GA will be responsible for organizing other professional development opportunities through similar volunteer subcommittees, such as the Grads Collab Conference.

Community

  • The HDFS-GA leadership will be tasked with maintaining the HDFS graduate student Facebook page, including inviting new members/students and posting events.
  • The HDFS-GA leadership will also be tasked with disseminating event information through Facebook, the HDFS listserv, the HDFS-GA webpage and other social media platforms, including a Google calendar, as applicable.
  • The HDFS-GA will work in collaboration with the EGA to hold college-wide professional development and social events. This collaboration could be facilitated through leadership or subcommittee.

HELPING THE UD COMMUNITY

The University community will benefit from increased HDFS representation on the GSG and a stronger and sustainable HDFS graduate student community. Additionally, professional development opportunities hosted by the HDFS-GA, such as conferences and the Brown Bag series, may be open to the University community.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

Individual members will benefit through greater intradepartmental communication, greater representation in the University and college, sustainable opportunities for professional development and an increased sense of community among HDFS graduate students.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP

To be a member of the organization, an individual must be a current graduate student in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences.

PURPOSE

  • Provide a liaison between the graduate students and the faculty of the Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science who attends departmental meetings and represents the interests of the graduate students (the president/vice president).
  • Provide a GSG senator from the Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science
    (senator).
  • Provide support for new graduate students (new student liaison).
  • Organize yearly elections to fill the above positions (president).
  • Represent the department to the wider community of linguists by organizing the hosting of academic conferences (all members).

GOALS and OBJECTIVES

  • Example: Raise the issue of storage for past exams and coursework, which are currently stored in lockedfile cabinets in the graduate student office. Space is running out (the president/vice president).
  • Example: Raise the issue of international student fees. What is their purpose? (senator)
  • Example: Create a checklist that specifies how to support new students (especially international students).
  • Hold elections.

HELPING THE UD COMMUNITY

LAD provides an organ of graduate student government that is local to the Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science and addresses the specific needs of the graduate students in that department. Since these needs are real and the welfare of these graduate students benefits the University community in the same way that the welfare of any other group of graduate students does, the existence of LAD benefits the University community.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

Members will be represented by the president or vice president in faculty meetings and by the senator in GSG meetings. New members will be supported as they integrate into the department community by the new student liaison.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP

The only requirement is that members or office holders be graduate students in the Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science.

PURPOSE

The organization is dedicated to giving a voice to student concerns, prerogatives and achievements on behalf of graduate students in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Delaware.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES

The organization aims to provide a transparent and nurturing atmosphere to all members of the department.

HELPING THE UD COMMUNITY

This organization is primarily aimed at the graduate students of the Department of Political Science and International Relations.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

Members of the organization are part of the association’s board. There is little benefit from holding these positions. Graduate students in the department benefit by having a voice in faculty meetings, in meeting with the chair, and in the GSA.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP

Both members and office holders must be gradate students, in good standing, in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Delaware.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this organization is to allow the feedback from the students to be used to guide the organizational changes in the Psychological and Brain Sciences department. The members will develop, distribute and analyze monthly wellbeing surveys to all current graduate students in the Psychological and Brain Sciences department (our templates will be shared openly so other departments can freely use them if they form similar initiatives). These results will then be presented to the acting faculty of the department and used to inform the policy-making trajectory of the department. The organization will also maintain other channels of student feedback such as an online suggestion box.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES

The overarching goal of the organization is to make opinions and feedback of graduate students to be heard and taken into account when the leadership of the department develops plans and policies affecting students. We plan to accomplish that by collecting feedback via surveys and suggestion boxes and incentivizing students to share feedback. This feedback will then be aggregated (so it is easily presentable in a graphical form) and shared with the faculty and administration of the department for guidance.

HELPING THE UD COMMUNITY

The most obvious recipients of the benefits are the graduate students of the Psychological and Brain Sciences program. Their opinions and needs will be more saliently represented in the decision-making process of the faculty leadership. Hence, their needs are much more likely to be satisfied. The faculty members of the department will also likely benefit from this organization since they will be more in touch with the student body of the department, leading to a more well-rounded conflict-free communication process.

We have plans for making all our initiatives publicly protocolized allowing other departments to follow in our steps and use our materials should they choose to do so.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

The individual members will receive rich experience in developing and analyzing survey data. They will also have an opportunity to hone their public speaking skills and better understand the interpersonal dynamic in the hierarchical work environment.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP

To be a member an individual needs to be a current graduate student in the Psychological and Brain Sciences department.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICERS

The officers will need to be active graduate student representatives in the faculty meetings or be actively involved in the development/maintenance of the graduate student wellbeing survey.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this organization shall be to promote the academic and professional development of graduate students in sociology and criminal justice and serve as the official voice of sociology and criminal justice graduate students in representing their interests to the faculty, the administration and the University community at large.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES

SCJGC is dedicated to addressing the needs of the M.A. and Ph.D. students in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at UD. A goal is to support the retention of students enrolled in the graduate programs including sociology and criminology.

HELPING THE UD COMMUNITY

The University of Delaware community can benefit from having SCJGC become an official registered student organization because SCJGC will create a space on campus specifically designed for graduate students in sociology and criminology. SCJGC will meet the specific unique needs of sociology and criminology graduate students that may not be served by other organizations.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

Members of SCJGC will benefit by developing a supportive network within the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice. Not only will SCJGC be a space to share resources, but it will also become a space to voice student concerns. Student members will be able to participate in professional development opportunities.

We are a student-led, non-denominational Christian fellowship, and we exist to bring glory to God by studying and obeying His Word together, supporting each other through the challenges of graduate school, and sharing his gospel of salvation with those around us.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES

• Provide a supportive and encouraging Christian community for graduate students on campus.
• Serve campus and the surrounding community in tangible ways, following the example of Jesus Christ.

HELPING THE UD COMMUNITY

We believe that belonging to a community, especially a community separate from one’s field of study, is critical to the well-being and health of graduate students on campus. In addition, many Christians believe that spiritual wellness is a strong component of overall wellness. InterGrad is a niche for Christian graduate students and a safe space for non-Christian graduate students. Providing this community is beneficial for all involved: Graduate students are offered an important source of support and encouragement; healthy graduate students are beneficial for the University as a whole.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

The graduate student experience is a unique one, which is why graduate students often seek community with other graduate students who understand the graduate student experience. InterGrad provides a community for graduate students in the context of Christian living. Community with other Christians is a fundamental principle of Christian life; we provide a community where graduate students can support and encourage one another, as well as practice Christian disciplines such as Bible study and communal prayer. We believe that these things are beneficial to our members.

PURPOSE

EmPOWER (Empathic Peers Offering Wisdom, Encouragement, and Resources) is a mentoring program with a mission to support graduate students in UD's interdisciplinary Microbiology Graduate Program (MGP). Our efforts include de-stressing events, personal and professional development opportunities, and mentorship guidance. The organization leverages the framework that began in UD's College of Engineering (COE) as a way to promote mental health and wellness among graduate students. MGP EmPOWER pairs senior and first-year students to create a network of support for first-year students and provide mentoring opportunities for more senior students. Participants will attend training that outlines expectations and best practices. Mentors and mentees check in with each other throughout the year and meet one-on-one for support. MGP EmPOWER also hosts de-stressing events (such as movie/game nights, holiday parties and hikes) which are open to all members of the Microbiology Program. These events allow new students to meet and interact with other members of the Microbiology cohort in a friendly, casual environment that fosters a sense of community.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Because the MGP program is interdisciplinary, MGP EmPOWER also provides an opportunity for microbiology students from different labs and departments to interact as a cohort. Goals include: mentorship, community building, helping new students adjust to life at UD, helping new students find the resources they need, and helping new students thrive in graduate school.

PURPOSE

The Neuroscience Graduate Student Association is committed to building a community for graduate students in the field of neuroscience across disciplines to help foster the success of the students, share the excitement of research with the world, and promote the academic competitiveness of UD in neuroscience.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES

The Neuroscience Graduate Student Association, serving the University of Delaware, is a non-profit graduate student organization committed to fostering a community among graduate students in the field of neuroscience. Rooted in the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Graduate Program, the NGSA creates a platform for graduate neuroscience researchers across areas and departments to connect and offers them opportunities to build networks, gain knowledge, increase productivity, and fulfill professional aspirations. NGSA accomplishes its mission by gathering resources to meet the needs of graduate students at different stages of their academic and professional paths. The organization aims to provide one-on-one peer mentorship for new students to help them make the transition to graduate school and guide them through the academic and emotional challenges of early graduate research. The organization aims to organize academic seminars by inviting internal and external graduate researchers from diverse academic backgrounds so that knowledge and excitement are shared, the horizons of the students are broadened, and a stronger bond among young scholars is facilitated. The organization also aims to help senior graduate students achieve their professional goals by organizing career-building events to foster long-term planning, alleviate student stress, and construct a social network.

HELPING THE UD COMMUNITY

In recent years, neuroscience consistently ranked in the top 5 most funded research areas by NIH, and this trend is increasing evidenced by the estimated NIH funding for neuroscience in 2023 ranking 2nd after clinical research. Therefore, promoting neuroscience research allows the University of Delaware to be more academically competitive against institutions in the region, and in the world. An important component of promoting research involves the most basic research unit – every graduate student, to succeed in their projects, and their programs. The Neuroscience Graduate Student Association (NGSA) aims to foster the success of neuroscience graduate students by building a supportive community and providing services that suit the needs of graduate researchers (e.g., seminars, mentoring programs, and career events). Graduate students are the driving force behind research conducted at UD, and NGSA through its events and support will further their academic and professional development. This could attract more scholars and students to pursue neuroscience at UD, and that will expand and strengthen the neuroscience community at UD.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

Individual members of the Neuroscience Graduate Student Association enjoy benefits across the stages of their program: new students will be paired with a senior mentor at their matriculation to help them make the transition smoothly; students at all stages participate in academic seminars to gain exposure to brain research at and outside of the University of Delaware; senior graduate students are particularly encouraged to attend career events to prepare them for the next step of their path.

PURPOSE

To provide current graduate students and postdocs the opportunity to present either their current research or a topic of choice to a group of fellow students in the field.

GOALS and OBJECTIVES

We aim to provide a safe space for students to present their work. We encourage the audience to ask questions and make suggestions to the speaker, giving the speaker a chance to get input on their research or presentation style from students not in their research group. During each presentation, we choose a problem or mechanism to work through in small groups on the board. Over the summer, we have a synthesis competition, where we divide into groups of four-to-six people working on a synthesis to a common natural product. At the end of the summer, each group presents their proposed route. For the rest of the summer, we work on problem sets in small groups and then go over the answers on the board.

HELPING THE UD COMMUNITY

Our group encourages equality within the science field. Each semester, we invite a seminar speaker to present during the OJC time period. We also incorporate outreach, including meeting with high school students to talk about our research and encouraging them to pursue a job in the STEM fields.

INDIVIDUAL BENEFITS

By providing students the opportunity to present their research to their peers, our members get to improve their public speaking abilities. As an audience member, you are encouraged to ask questions, forcing you to be thinking deeply about other people’s chemistry. When the audience asks a question, the speakers have to think critically on their feet in order to answer. All of these skills help our members throughout their graduate careers, such as candidacy exams, and are also helpful for job interviews and in our future jobs.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP

To present: organic chemistry graduate student or postdoc

Audience: affiliated with the chemistry and biochemistry department
