Mentoring at UD

The Blue Hens working to become tomorrow’s scientists and scholars are guided throughout their Graduate College journey by faculty mentors, each trained to nurture confidence and foster career success as students begin to engage in real-world research.

The University of Delaware Graduate College offers a range of resources for both faculty mentors and their student mentees, including training sessions, guides to creating a formal mentoring plan and tips on optimizing the mentor-mentee relationship. A special focus is placed on mentoring methods that foster an inclusive environment and ensure that students from all backgrounds feel valued and respected.

A RESEARCH-BASED PRACTICE

The Graduate College has turned to worldwide experts for guidance on building effective mentorship practices. Training and activities are based on the evidence-based, interactive Entering Mentoring model developed by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, now facilitated by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER). This training gives mentors skills in collective problem-solving and connects them with resources to optimize mentoring practices. The Entering Mentoring curricula is expressly designed to align with National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) guidelines, which seek to ensure the standards for preparation of mentors involved in training grants.

Culturally Aware Mentor (CAM) Workshop

Focusing on mentoring people of different racial and ethnic backgrounds. Participants are required to complete a general research mentor training before attending.
