Lauren Turenchalk, AS20

The Gift of Experience

Lauren Turenchalk, AS20, always dreamed of working on Capitol Hill. When she had an opportunity to take an unpaid internship with Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, she wasn’t sure she could afford to accept the opportunity in one of the country’s most expensive cities. But with help from the Student Internship Fund, she realized her dream.

The Student Internship Fund is an initiative of the Career Center established to support students participating in unpaid internships, providing them with up to $3,000 to cover living expenses. With support from the Fund, Turenchalk—a double major in political science and history with a minor in public policy—spent her summer learning the inner workings of politics and taking the opportunity to explore her professional path.

This internship reaffirmed my passion for pursuing a career in government and politics,” said Turenchalk. “I networked with staff and interns in our office, as well as other congressional offices and organizations. It was very helpful to learn about different job descriptions, career paths, and issue areas. I feel more confident as a candidate for a job when I graduate from UD and have learned specific writing skills that are necessary for a job in a political office.”

Adam Helgeson, career counselor for public service, policy, and social impact, manages the Fund and has met hundreds of students in need of financial support to complete unpaid internships. Out of the 70 students who applied for funding this year, only 30 were awarded due to funding limitations.

“We talk a lot about equity and access in education and we’re making great strides in the classroom, but right now we’re in a place where employability isn’t just based on education anymore,” said Helgeson. “We have quite a few students doing really great things who face barriers to completing unpaid internships and this Fund helps overcome those barriers.”

Turenchalk couldn’t agree more with the life-changing impact the Student Internship Fund can have on one’s life. When she thinks of those who have already invested in the Fund, she’s filled with gratitude.

“Young people are the future and too often, income and wealth inequality are an obstacle for them to get ahead in life and pursue their dreams,” said Turenchalk. “Even the most determined, capable and passionate students can face obstacles simply because of the amount of money in their pocket. I will never forget the support that those who contributed to the fund gave me, and I am determined one day to give that same support and financial help to those who need it and deserve it the most.”
