My research focuses on how the human brain controls movement, how it develops and maintains motor skills, and how neurologic disease impacts these processes. The long-term goal of my research is to advance rehabilitation practice by determining how to optimize interventions that will improve physical function and quality of life for people with neurologic disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. I use various behavioral and computational techniques to achieve three major scientific objectives:

  1. Characterize specific motor learning processes and determine how to achieve efficient learning and retention of skilled movements
  2. Identify targets for rehabilitation interventions by understanding the specific sources of cognitive-motor impairments caused by neurologic disorders
  3. Optimize rehabilitation interventions by either leveraging unimpaired cognitive-motor systems, or by directly addressing impaired systems to improve learning.
