14 things you need to know about Commencement 2019

The University of Delaware’s 170th Commencement exercises are scheduled on Saturday, June 1, in Delaware Stadium.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning to attend.

  • Tickets are required for this year’s ceremony, and both graduates and their guests will need them to get into the ceremony that morning. No one will be admitted without a printed ticket.
  • Commencement is held rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, the ceremony may be shortened.
  • Traffic can be heavy in Newark on Commencement morning, so plan to arrive early. Arrival by 7:30 a.m. Is recommended.
  • Parking lots around Delaware Stadium will open at 6 a.m. For detailed travel information, visit the Parking and Directions page.
  • Gates will open at 7 a.m.
  • Please arrive early to allow time to go through the security check. As a reminder, attendees will not be permitted to bring in umbrellas, alcohol, balloons, banners, signs, noisemakers and backpacks, and they may not wear masks, hoods or costumes that cover their faces, except for religious or medical reasons.
  • Graduating students must arrive by 7:30 a.m. and go directly to the procession line-up area at Grant Field, behind the east stands, where they will go through a security check and present their tickets.
  • Students will begin processing into Delaware Stadium at 8:20 a.m.
  • For those unable to attend the ceremony in person, Commencement will be broadcast live in two tents on The Green that morning. It also will be featured on Facebook Live at https://www.facebook.com/udelaware/ and webcast on the UDLive site.
  • The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m.
  • Featured speaker will be Matt Nagy, head coach of the Chicago Bears, UD alumnus and an All-American Blue Hen quarterback.
  • The ceremony lasts approximately two hours.
  • Don’t forget to bring sun screen.
  • Share the experience on social media using #UDGrad2019 and #BlueHensForever.
