Unexpected Success: Jennalee Fede, EG11

Hard work, a passion for the environment and the desire to help the community she loves has led Jennalee Fede, EG11, to an unexpected achievement. After 11 years of as an environmental engineer with Duffield Associates, LLC, Fede was recently named the 2021 Young Engineer of the Year for the Delaware chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers.

“I had no idea I was even being considered for the award until I was chosen,” Fede said. “It means a lot to me to receive this honor because I have a passion for the environment but also a passion for my community and wanting to help make things better.”

In addition to her volunteer work with organizations like the Delaware chapter of the American Water Resources Association and other environmental groups, Fede has been putting her skills and passion to work on a project focused on the coronavirus. Since the summer, she has been managing a partnership with New Castle County and UD’s Center for Environmental and Wastewater-based Epidemiological Research lab to test wastewater for COVID-19. Fede even worked with Blue Hens to identify locations on campus to test dorm wastewater as a pilot program.

She believes one of her greatest strengths in continuing to successfully manage the crucial and timely project is her ability to communicate across generations and hierarchy.

“Right now, people entering the field are either older or younger and it’s creating a bottleneck in the workforce, because they don’t seem to connect and effectively communicate,” Fede said. “I’ve seen the struggle, and I’ve been able to bridge that gap in a lot of ways. I may not always be the smartest person in the room, but I’m smart enough to bring them all together to get something done.”

Fede also credits her communication skills for success to more company-focused efforts, which also led to her recent recognition. She created employee retention, advancement and professional development initiatives to prepare Duffield Associates for a merge with two other companies—Hull & Associates and HSW Consulting. Fede’s efforts enabled a smooth transition for her multi-divisional company to take on a larger role in the environmental engineering field, now spanning the entire East Coast.

While interning with Duffield during her senior year at UD, Fede never would have guessed she would be seeing so much success as an environmental engineer in more than a decade with the company. She hopes those looking to pursue the career “stick with it” to see where it can take them.

“My mother was my biggest inspiration for my interest in the environment, working for the largest water company in the state for many years, and letting me tag along for the different environment activities she was involved in. So, when I started at UD, I brought that interest with me, but generally didn’t know what I was getting into when I picked my major in environmental engineering,” Fede said. “A lot of people have a perception of what this profession is, but I encourage them to dig in and find out what environmental engineering really means to them. There are so many avenues you can take in this field—it’s not well defined, so you can define it for yourself. Follow your passion and work hard, and you’ll find success.”
