Music department opens 2018-19 concert season

Highlights include resident ensembles, faculty recitals, noted guests and Philadelphia Thanksgiving parade

The University of Delaware Department of Music will open its 2018 fall concert season on Friday, Sept. 14, with Capriccio Academia!, the 2018 Faculty Gala Concert, beginning at 8 p.m. in Mitchell Hall on UD’s Newark campus.

Throughout the semester, UD’s distinguished music faculty performs in acclaimed resident ensembles and faculty artist recitals, and brings world-class guest artist performances to the UD campus.  Students perform in the award-winning University of Delaware Chorale, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensembles. In addition, individual studio and student recitals throughout the semester are frequent and free. New this season, selected events will be available through online ticketing.

Highlights of the fall season include

  • The Calidore String Quartet in a September concert featuring the North American premiere of music by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Carolyn Shaw, who is slated for a guest appearance at the performance.
  • The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Lauren Reynolds, will give two mighty concerts with music by Husa and Hindemith.
  • In November, the 150-plus voices of Schola Cantorum join the Delaware Symphony Orchestra at Wilmington’s Grand Opera House in Cherubini’s stirring Requiem.
  • The UD Fightin’ Blue Hens Marching Band plays at football games home and away and will be a featured band with the only featured drill performance at the 6ABC broadcasted Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade.
  • The UD Symphony Orchestra wraps up the season with holiday music for all, featuring the animated film The Snowman by Howard Blake with live orchestral accompaniment.

Fall 2018 highlights

--Friday, Sept. 14: Capriccio Academia! The 2018 Faculty Gala Concert, 8 p.m., Mitchell Hall. Tickets – at the special price of $5 -- are available online, by phone and at the door.

--Friday, Sept. 28: Calidore String Quartet, visiting guest artist, 8 p.m., Gore Recital Hall, Roselle Center for the Arts. The concert will feature the North American premiere of a work by Pulitzer Prize-winner Caroline Shaw, who will attend the concert, as well as the rarely performed Chausson Concerto for Violin, Piano and String Quartet with violinist Arnaud Sussmann and pianist Michael Brown, Avery Fisher Career Grant winners and fellow members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Tickets are available online, by phone and at the door.

--Thursday, Oct. 11: UD Wind Ensemble: For A Future To Be Possible, 8 p.m., Mitchell Hall. Tickets are available online, by phone and at the door.

--Wednesday, Dec. 5: UD Wind Ensemble: Hindemith Masterworks, 8 p.m., Mitchell Hall. Tickets are available online, by phone and at the door.

--Friday, Nov. 9: Schola Cantorum, 7:30 p.m., the Grand Opera House, Wilmington, Delaware. Schola Cantorum joins the Delaware Symphony Orchestra in Cherubini's Requiem. Information is available at www.delawaresymphony.org.

--Thursday, Nov. 22: UD Fightin’ Blue Hens Marching Band, broadcast of the 6ABC Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade. UDMB has been invited to be a featured band in the 99th anniversary 6ABC Dunkin Donuts Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade, and it will be the only marching band in the parade to be offered the honor of a featured drill performance.

--Thursday, Dec. 6: UD Symphony Orchestra: A Magical Season for the Child In Us All, 7 p.m., Mitchell Hall. The concert will feature  Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite; Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson and the animated film The Snowman by Howard Blake, with live orchestral accompaniment. Tickets are available online, by phone and at the door.

Tickets on sale

Tickets are now on sale at $5 for students; $10 for faculty, alumni, seniors and staff; and $15 for adults. Individual student recitals and studio recitals are free.  Tickets are on sale in advance online or by phone by calling the box office at 302-831-2204 from noon-5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Tickets will be sold at the door by cash or check only, subject to availability.
