More than 1,000 University of Delaware undergraduate students will commence their new year with a new journey, UD study abroad.

Beginning Jan. 1, students will take flight for 28 countries from Barbados to Vietnam and everywhere in between. Together, 65-plus faculty members will guide the students as they explore new cultures and environments, immerse themselves in experiential learning and grow their international networks.

And with 47 programs, students’ academic interests are as wide as their wanderlust.

Based in Sydney, nursing students will trace the development of Australia’s healthcare system through the country’s unique historical, cultural and political contexts.  

On the opposite side of the globe, participants in the Dominica Geography program will traverse the small island nation’s rugged environment as they learn about natural resource management. Led by associate professor and Dominica native Tony Seraphin, participants will meet key government officials and gain an insider's perspective.

Students on the Vietnam and Cambodia Finance program will also gain new outlooks, studying the international business landscape through first-hand interactions with local entrepreneurs, financial institutions and government officials.

In Morocco, Arabic language students will improve their communication skills as they learn about Islamic art and visit iconic locations including Chefchaouen, Fez, Marrakesh, Meknes, Rabat and Tangiers.

Participants in Education and Disability Studies will venture outside the continental United States to Hawaii, where they will engage with local students, families, disability organizations and representatives from Hawaii’s Center for Disability Studies.

And for Electrical Engineering students, London will become lab as they experiment with the technology behind photography and smart devices.

“Every year the study abroad team at the Institute for Global Studies is excited to send off students to explore the world with UD faculty,” Associate Director Lisa Chieffo said. “When the groups return, we have the opportunity to read their evaluations and meet with faculty directors. We are so proud of the deep learning that occurs, both personal, professional, and discipline-based. Study abroad is a large operation with many moving parts and even more impact, and we enjoy reading and hearing accounts of this firsthand.”

About the Institute for Global Studies

The Institute for Global Studies (IGS) was created in 2009 to enhance the international dimensions of teaching, research and outreach at the University of Delaware. IGS provides leadership and support for programs and experiences that contribute to the education of informed, skilled, open-minded citizens of the world.

Best known for coordinating the University’s study abroad program, IGS also awards scholarships and grants to faculty and students for a number of global opportunities, and administers internationally-recognized State Department-sponsored programs such as the UD Fulbright Initiative, Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Student Leaders Institute, Mandela Washington Fellowship Program for Young African Leaders, and most recently the Study of the U.S. Institutes for Student Leaders on Women’s Leadership (SUSI-WL) program.
