This project is funded through the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, Office of the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). MEPI is a unique program designed to engage directly with and invest in the peoples of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). MEPI works to create vibrant partnerships with citizens to foster the development of pluralistic, participatory, and prosperous societies throughout the MENA region. MEPI partners with local, regional and international non-governmental organizations, the private sector, academic institutions, and governments. More information about MEPI can be found at

This U.S.-based program is operated under the auspices of the University's Institute for Global Studies. Applicants are nominated by US embassies and are selected by the Department of State. UD has been selected nine times to host the program and has welcomed over 200 participants from across the Middle East and North Africa to the University's main campus in Newark. The participants have been a mix of college students from different religions and cultures.

Since 2003, MEPI has sponsored a series of specially designed, high-level training student leaders programs for outstanding student leaders from the countries of the North Africa and Middle Eastern region. The MEPI Student Leaders Program provides a unique opportunity for participants to develop their leadership and civic engagement skills, with a specific emphasis on applying those skills in their home communities and countries to affect change. Additionally, the program enables the participants to learn about and discuss values, issues, and institutions that have played important roles throughout the history of the United States.

In addition to the on-campus academic component, study tours include trips to San Diego, California, New York City, and Washington, DC.

The University of Delaware has long been recognized as a leader in international education. It was an early pioneer in study abroad and now regularly hosts groups of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students from abroad providing them with creative programs blending academics and cultural enrichment.
