Masking

Effective immediately, we will no longer require:

  • Face masks indoors in non-classroom spaces on campus, including research labs, offices, and athletic event/student experience spaces

 

Face masks continue to be required in the following locations:

  • Classroom settings
  • Child-care facilities
  • On UD-sponsored transportation
  • In all healthcare and clinical areas, including all COVID testing locations

During the spring semester, the University provides initial KN95 masks to students, faculty and staff (one mask per person, per week). Surgical are also be available. 

  • Students living in the residence halls will receive the masks through their residence halls.
  • Students living off-campus can pick up masks at the distribution points listed below.
    Off-campus students must show ID to receive their 15 masks for the spring semester. 
    Distribution points: Morris Library, Carpenter Sports Building, Perkins Student Center, Trabant University Center, STAR Health Science Complex (North entrance)
  • On-campus employees will receive the masks through their departments. 

Individuals are free to wear masks they have procured as well. KN95 masks, while disposable, are designed to be worn multiple times safely; they can be used for a week before disposal, unless they are damaged or soiled.

Employee units should submit a single COVID Prevention Supply Order form per unit to the UD Office of Environmental Health and Safety to procure KN95 masks at the department level. KN95 masks are also readily available online and in many local retailers. 

 

For those who forgot their mask or their mask becomes unusable, single KN95 masks and surgical style masks are available at the following locations: 

  • Morris Library
  • Carpenter Sports Building
  • Perkins Student Center
  • Trabant University Center
  • STAR Health Science Complex (North entrance)

  • If possible, wash or sanitize your hands immediately before and after putting your KN95 on and immediately before and after taking it off when planning to reuse it.
  • Unfold your mask and flatten the metal nose clip.
  • Place the mask over your face, with the bottom below your chin and the nosepiece up.
  • Place the straps of the mask over each ear.
  • Adjust the metal nose clip using fingers from both hands to mold the clip to the shape of your nose.
  • Adjust fit as necessary to reduce air flow around the edges of the mask.
  • Significant facial hair (more than 3-days growth) adversely affects the ability of the KN95 to form a tight seal around your face, and thus reduces the KN95’s effectiveness at protecting you from COVID-19. Therefore, parts of your face that come in contact with the KN95 should be free of significant facial hair.
  • KN95s should not be worn in a lab setting with a potential for a fire hazard or work with pyrophorics.  EHS has flame-retardant fabric masks available for those who work with these materials.  If you wear a flame-retardant lab coat, you should be wearing a flame-retardant mask as well.
  • If you wear glasses and find fogging to be a nuisance, ensure you have a proper seal at the nosepiece. You can also wash your lenses with soapy water and shake off the excess before putting on your mask (wipe off nose piece to minimize skin irritation).

You should replace your KN95 when it:

  • Becomes soiled

  • No longer covers the nose and mouth

  • Has stretched out or has damaged ties or straps

  • Cannot stay on the face

  • Has holes or tears in the fabric

A KN95 may be disposed of in the normal trash.

Masks may be removed by those who are speaking in front of a class or event if they are up to date with COVID vaccination and are at least 6 feet from others.

COVID-19 Testing

All students who are not fully vaccinated and/or have an exemption for the COVID vaccine/booster must complete weekly COVID PCR testing at UD Surveillance testing sites to remain compliant with UD COVID Protocols. Your test results will be automatically sent to your UD Health Portal if you test at UD Surveillance testing. 

All individuals on campus who have not received a COVID-19 vaccination are required to get a COVID-19 test once a week. It is strongly encouraged that you test at a UD Surveillance testing site; however, if you cannot attend UD Surveillance testing during the week, you can obtain a weekly COVID PCR test at Curative, pharmacies, community testing sites, or other locations.


PCR / NAAT testing is the only acceptable COVID screening testing method. Antigen tests (including home rapid antigen tests like BINAX) are not accepted for screening due to the higher chance of false-negative results in people without symptoms.

If you test off campus (Including Curative), you must upload your weekly COVID PCR test results by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday through your UD Health Portal to remain in compliance with weekly test requirements. Once you click on the link and login, click on the button "Enter My COVID-19 Test Results."

  • Based on new guidelines from the CDC and discussions with leadership and medical professionals regarding the congregate living environment on our campus, UD moved to a 7-day isolation period for students who test positive for COVID-19. Read more about the policy change.

  • Isolate for 7 full days (7 full days after symptoms begin, or 7 full days after your positive test date, if you are asymptomatic at time of initial testing). The day your symptoms begin or the date of your positive test (if asymptomatic) is Day Zero. You may leave isolation on the 8th day, as long as your symptoms have improved and you have not had a fever for 24 hours.  (Example: Symptoms began 1/10/2022, 7 full day isolation period through 1/17/2022, Leave isolation on 1/18/2022).  If you have a fever or your symptoms have not improved 24 hrs prior to day 8, contact Student Health Services at 302-831-2226, as this indicates you are still contagious and would need to extend your isolation for up to 10 days.

  • Isolation means not interacting with others inside or outside of your residence. The goal of isolating is to prevent spread of the virus to other people. Do not interact with anyone not COVID+ or attend in-person classes, work, parties, public businesses, restaurants, bars, gyms etc. You should not share a bedroom or a bathroom with anyone else during your isolation period.

    • If you are vaccinated, you must still isolate for 7 days if you test positive for COVID.

    • If you live anywhere on campus, consider returning to your home residence to isolate. If returning home is not possible, you must contact your RA or call Student Health to help arrange on-campus Isolation Housing. Learn more here about Quarantine/Isolation for on-campus residents.

  • If you are contacted by UD’s Contact Tracing team, you are required to comply.

  • If you did not receive your positive result from testing at Harker ISE Lab or SHS, upload your COVID-19 results into your UD Health Portal under “Enter my COVID-19 test results” within 24 hours.

    • Make sure your upload includes your name, date of birth, test date, and test results.

    • You do not need to upload your results if you were tested at Harker ISE Lab or SHS. Those results will automatically feed into your UD Health Portal.

Anyone who is known to have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19:

If you are:

Vaccinated and Boosted

No quarantine necessary; continue to properly wear a well-fitted face mask around others and monitor for symptoms for 7 days. It is recommended that you get tested 5 days after exposure.

Vaccinated but not yet Eligible for Booster

No quarantine necessary; continue to properly wear a well-fitted face mask around others and monitor for symptoms for 7 days. It is recommended that you get tested 5 days after exposure or when any symptoms develop.

Vaccinated, Eligible for Booster, Not Yet Boosted

You must quarantine for 7 full days and monitor for symptoms. Get tested 5 days after exposure, or when any symptoms develop. Continue to properly wear a well-fitted face mask at all times.

Not Vaccinated with Exemption

You must quarantine for 7 full days and monitor for symptoms. Get tested 5 days after exposure, or when any symptoms develop. Continue to properly wear a well-fitted face mask at all times.

The University will conduct regular COVID-19 testing throughout the semester.

 

The University uses a PCR diagnostic test to detect an active virus. A saliva sample will be collected at the testing site. Samples are identified only by bar codes, so the identity of individuals is not known to laboratory personnel.

No. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, you should self-quarantine. Students should call Student Health Services to discuss their symptoms before visiting in person so that they can be routed most efficiently to receive appropriate care. Others should call their healthcare provider.

 

Because UD is conducting the asymptomatic testing program, results for asymptomatic tests will be available the following day. Symptomatic test results through Student Health Services may have a longer turnaround time. 

If you participate in UD Surveillance testing on campus, you will receive your test results in an email (or accessible on the Student Health Service (SHS) health portal) within 24 hours. You do not need to submit results that are provided by the University.

If you participate in off campus testing, timeframes will vary. 

How to upload your off-campus test results:

  • Students: If you utilize an off-campus testing site, please upload your results to the secure UD Health Portal. Once you click on the link and login, click on the button "Enter My COVID-19 Test Results." 
  • Employees: If you utilize an off-campus testing site, please upload your results to Employee COVID Testing Submission Form.

If you participated in on-campus testing and your COVID-19 test is positive, you will be informed by UD medical personnel of your positive test and what steps you need to take for isolation.

If you tested off-campus, results should be uploaded to your health portal.

You will be exempt from surveillance testing until 90 days have passed since your positive test.

When filling out your COVID 19 Daily Health Screening, the questions on the second screen only apply to the two weeks prior to filling it out. Please answer based on your experiences over the course of the previous two weeks.

Testing data will help identify areas where the disease may be circulating and the impact it may be having on certain populations. This will inform decision-making about the status of facilities, programs and other campus operations. It will also help health experts understand and predict the trajectory of the pandemic. 

 

Testing is an integral part of public health practices to keep our community healthy and safe from the coronavirus. UD expects all those invited to participate in the testing program to do so. Testing protocols follow all best practices and laws to protect privacy. Cases of non-compliance may be referred to the Office of Student Conduct (for students), the Provost’s Office (for faculty) or Human Resources (for staff).

 

You may schedule an appointment to be tested. You do not need to receive an invitation to participate in UD-sponsored weekly surveillance testing. 

You will not be billed for participating in UD Surveillance testing held at one of the two UD testing locations; or for being tested at SHS if you schedule an appointment with them because you are symptomatic.

If you are unable to attend on campus surveillance testing during the hours provided it is your responsibility to utilize an off campus testing site and upload your results.

  • Employees: If you utilize an off-campus testing site, please upload your results to Employee COVID Testing Submission Form.

All UD locations and facilities must follow the guidance that we have in place for the University (vaccinations, health and safety precautions, daily health screening, etc.) In terms of the ongoing testing, that service will not be mobile. If an individual on another campus is not vaccinated and therefore must test weekly, they might be asked to come to the main campus in Newark. Those situations will be handled as they arise. Those who are coming onto any campus, or into any UD building, must complete the health questionnaire. Daily health screening and contact tracing will be the norm at all UD facilities.

All students who are selected are required to complete a test according to the Student Guidelines. This is a critical component of our work to monitor the state of the pandemic.  

  • Sanctions will be dependent on various factors and, as such, we are not able to provide definitive outcomes. 

  • Lack of compliance with testing requirements for multiple weeks could result in removal from campus housing.

The University is committed to supporting the health and safety of all students, and we will continue to work with you to find solutions as appropriate.

In February the University began providing the FlowFlex  COVID-19 antigen home test kits. Staff and students are permitted to obtain one test kit per week. More information and registration link are available on the Testing page.

For additional assistance, please reach out to the UD Office of Student Life, where more resources are available. Also, please note that the White House has announced new steps to expand access to at-home testing solutions. Of note, Americans with private insurance will be able to ask for reimbursement for rapid COVID-19 tests beginning Saturday, Jan. 15; any tests purchased before January 15 will not qualify for insurance reimbursement. Anyone interested should contact their insurance carrier.

Daily Health Screenings

University students, faculty, staff, retirees, spouses and visitors are only required to complete a daily COVID-19 health questionnaire if they are coming to campus that day or if they reside on campus. Those not planning to come to campus that day are not required to answer the questionnaire and can disregard the daily email. 

You will not be granted access to any UD building unless you have completed this daily health check. 

Health screenings will help provide early detection of a COVID-19 infection and may help prevent an outbreak in the UD community. Health screenings are an integral component of the University’s plan to help protect the health and safety of all students, faculty, staff and visitors, as well as their families and friends. It is absolutely essential that all questions are answered completely and honestly each time the health screening is completed.

Yes, all individuals coming to campus and entering any campus building are expected to complete the daily health screening and to be cleared prior to entering a building. The health screening questionnaire is available at http://covidcheck.udel.edu/ and via a QR code posted around campus that can be scanned with a smartphone.

The questionnaire will ask the individual about possible COVID-19 symptoms and potential exposure to others who may be infected with the virus. 

Once you submit your screening, you will receive one of three results: a green check, a red X or a yellow triangle.

Green Check: If you report no COVID-19 symptoms or possible exposure, you will receive a green check and you may enter campus facilities.

Yellow Triangle: You are receiving this message because you have not uploaded or taken a UD COVID-19 test in the last 7 days. You will only be permitted to access your residence hall (if applicable), a University testing center and Student Health Services until you upload a negative COVID-19 test result from the last 7 days. 

Red X: Based on your survey responses, you are not cleared to access campus today. If you are a current student either living in a residence hall or off campus, contact Student Health Services at 302-831-2226. For all others, we recommend you quarantine/isolate at home and contact a medical professional.

Students are only permitted to access their residence hall, UD COVID-19 testing center, or Student Health Services, or grab-and-go dining at UD Dining Facilities until your documentation is uploaded and reviewed.


Faculty and staff should either upload their booster information to the UD Health Portal or obtain PCR testing at a UD COVID-19 testing center as you do not have a negative PCR COVID-19 test result on file in the last week. If you did not get your COVID-19 test at a UD testing center, your test results must be submitted to the UD Health Portal. If you have received your booster, please upload your documentation to the UD Health Portal.

Faculty are not expected to, but they may exercise the option to do so at their discretion. If instructors decide to confirm students’ health screening (Qualtrics green check), they must do so for all students in the class (i.e., do not ask only a few students to show their green check). If faculty exercise the option, students are expected to comply to enter the classroom. When monitoring for green checks, one should make sure that "Authenticated User" is showing and that the date is accurate.

Boosters

Research has shown that the immunity from the initial series of COVID vaccines decreases over time, which leaves you more susceptible to illness. Boosters do just as they suggest - boost your immunity back to appropriate levels. For us to have a continuous in-person spring semester, we must maximize the protection of our community.

All eligible UD students (regardless of in-person or online class status) are required to be fully vaccinated and receive a booster and upload their documentation to the UD Health Portal by February 1, 2022. If you have an existing exemption for the COVID vaccine, that exemption will also apply to the booster.

Per the CDC, you are eligible to get a booster if it has been five months or more since your second Pfizer or second Moderna vaccine, or if it has been two months or more since your single J&J vaccine. Over 90% of our vaccinated students are eligible for boosters before the Feb. 1, 2022 deadline.

NOW - if it has been five months or more since your second Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or two months or more from your J&J vaccine. The deadline to upload your booster card is Feb. 1, 2022. Remember it takes 2 weeks for your booster to be effective. 

If you completed your second Pfizer or Moderna vaccine less than 5 months ago or your J&J vaccine less than 2 months ago, you may not be eligible for a booster by the time of the February 1, 2022 deadline. In that case, you will have 30 days from the day of your booster eligibility in spring semester to get your booster and upload your card to your UD Health Portal. For example, if you completed your mRNA vaccine series on September 1, 2021, you would be eligible for the booster on February 1, 2022 and would have until March 1, 2022 to fulfill this requirement.

The CDC recommends Pfizer or Moderna (mRNA) boosters due to their increased effectiveness and reduced risk of side effects compared to the J&J vaccine. If you are not able to get an mRNA booster for any reason, the J&J vaccine is acceptable.

If you were vaccinated with a WHO-approved vaccine (AstraZeneca-Oxford, Covaxin-BBI, Sinopharm-BIBP, Sinovac) more than 5 months ago, the CDC recommends receiving a single dose of Pfizer vaccine for your booster. UD recommends obtaining this Pfizer booster through the Hudson State Service Center. This Public Health vaccine site is walk-in only, no appointments are needed.

Yes. The CDC recommends all eligible adults receive a COVID booster, even if they had COVID in the past. Natural immunity from prior COVID illness varies in duration and efficacy and is not as strong as immunity from vaccines and boosters. This leaves a person more susceptible to repeat infection. There is also no lab value / antibody level that has been determined to demonstrate protection from future infection. More information is available from the CDC at the following two links:

If you received monoclonal antibody treatment during your COVID illness, you must wait 90 days to receive your booster.

If you are eligible, you can get the booster when you have completed your isolation period and your symptoms have resolved. Talk to your healthcare provider for individual scenarios.

If you experienced Multi-system Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS) during your COVID illness, please consult with your healthcare provider about the timing of receiving your COVID booster.

If you already have a medical or religious exemption on file with Student Health for the COVID vaccine, you are also exempt from the booster. You will need to continue to comply with weekly COVID PCR Testing. See more information below regarding weekly COVID testing requirements.

If you wish to submit a request for a medical or religious exemption specifically for the COVID booster, please check Student Health’s website for details. 

Students who are out of compliance with either the COVID booster requirement or weekly COVID PCR Testing requirement will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct. Your ability to complete academic assignments may be impacted until you upload appropriate booster documentation or test results to your UD Health Portal.

Yes, you can receive a COVID vaccine/booster at the same time as another vaccine (like the flu vaccine).

Vaccinations

  4. Enter the dates and manufacturer of your COVID vaccines/booster under "COVID-19 vaccine history."
  5. After verifying that all information is correct, click "Done" in the bottom right hand corner. Results are typically processed within 5-7 business days by SHS staff.

Exemptions may be granted with appropriate documentation explaining reasons for exemption, including authorized medical or religious purposes.

Students with grounds for exemption from this requirement may visit the Student Health Services website for information on submitting documentation for COVID-19 vaccination exemption.

Students who do not upload proof of vaccination to the UD Health Portal or are granted an exemption by the deadline will have a registration hold placed on their student records.

We understand that not all international students will have access to vaccines in their home country, but currently vaccines are required for travel to the U.S. Please visit The Center for Global Programs & Services COVID-19 page for more information.  

The University of Delaware will recognize vaccines that are approved by the FDA, CDC, State of Delaware, or the World Health Organization. If you have received a vaccine that is not on the approved list, please contact Student Health Services for guidance prior to arrival to campus.

Due to privacy restrictions, the University cannot disclose the health or vaccination status of any individual student.

All University of Delaware students and employees are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine from the Delaware Division of Public Health. 

Yes. This will continue to ensure that all individuals using campus facilities are not experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the best source of information about the virus, the disease and the vaccines. The pandemic is a constantly evolving situation, with new information available frequently, so it is important to stay up to date with developments.

Are OLLI members, instructors, and guests required to be vaccinated against COVID-19?

Any OLLI member or instructor who will be on UD campuses (including OLLI campuses in New Castle, Kent, and Sussex Counties) or who will be attending OLLI classes/events at off-campus locations must be fully immunized against COVID-19. Exemptions will be accommodated for OLLI members and instructors who cannot receive a COVID-19 vaccine for medical or religious reasons. Approved OLLI guests are not required to be fully immunized against COVID-19, but we strongly encourage vaccinations for all guests. 

OLLI members who participate in a fully online program are exempt from University of Delaware’s COVID-19 Vaccination and Booster mandates. If you plan to physically access any UD facilities while UD’s COVID-19 Vaccination and Booster mandates are in effect, you must fully comply with the mandates.

Can I attend classes virtually and join in-person after my 2-week post-vaccination waiting period?

OLLI members can virtually attend classes that are offered online without being fully immunized against COVID-19. OLLI members are welcome to join in-person classes after submitting proof of full vaccination. 

 

If I am diagnosed with COVID-19 during the session can I get a refund?

Refunds for OLLI membership and class fees are approved in some instances, generally involving member life events that preclude them from continuing as a participant in the program. Refund requests must be submitted to the OLLI Office during the session for which the refund is requested. Refunds will be prorated and must be approved by the program manager.

 

How will you enforce the vaccination policy?

OLLI staff members will verify vaccination compliance prior to the first day of in-person classes using UD Student Health Services data and participant-submitted data. Registered OLLI members who have not provided evidence of vaccination or completed the vaccination exemption process may not attend in-person classes.

The following guidelines apply to the following students: Professional and Continuing Education Noncredit Students, and Continuing Education Non-Degree Students (CEND), Graduate College Non-Degree Students. 

 

Are professional and continuing education students enrolled in noncredit programs required to be vaccinated against COVID-19?

If you are a student in a fully online program, you are exempt from University of Delaware’s COVID-19 Vaccination and Booster mandates. If you plan to physically access any UD facilities while UD’s COVID-19 Vaccination and Booster mandates are in effect you must fully comply with the mandates.

 

How do I provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination?

COVID Leave may be used if the vaccine is administered during work hours or if the employee has an adverse reaction to the vaccine. In situations where the employee requests leave due to an adverse reaction to the vaccine, the University may request documentation from a medical provider. 

No, you are not required to disclose your vaccination or exemption status. 

Human Resources receives the requests for exemption. For medical exemptions, UD Student Health Services and the Office for Disability Services consult with HR. For religious exemptions, a confidential three-person panel reviews the requests. All identifying information is removed from the request prior to review. Human Resources issues all approvals, denials and requests for additional information.

Contact Tracing

The Delaware Division of Public Health will conduct contact tracing of individuals who test positive for COVID-19. The University will cooperate and may assist the Division of Public Health. 

If you receive a call from (302) 446-4262, or your caller ID says “DE PUBLICHEALTH”, that is a representative from the Delaware Contact Tracing Program calling to give you important information about your health. Please answer the call and take the time to speak with the contact tracers.

 

An individual who has been within 6 feet for a total of 15 minutes or more within 2 days prior to illness onset of a COVID-19 positive individual, regardless of masking status.

Contact tracing is an integral part of public health practices to keep our community healthy. UD and the state of Delaware expect all those involved in contract tracing to participate fully and respond in a timely manner. According to the Delaware Division of Public Health, those who refuse to participate in contact tracing will be asked by the state to quarantine or self-isolate. The state has the legal authority to pursue a court order to require that person to remain at home, if necessary. 

 

Health and Safety

Effective Feb. 28, 2022, masks inside residence halls within an individual’s community/floor are no longer be required.

UD’s facilities and health teams have reviewed ventilation systems throughout the University and took appropriate steps and made updates as necessary. There have been no documented cases of COVID-19 spread through recirculating air in an HVAC system.

If you are not cleared to utilize campus facilities as a result of the University of Delaware Daily Health Check, you may order a meal from the dining halls and designate a roommate, friend or UD staff member to pick it up, or you may pick up a pre-packaged meal yourself using designated entrances, per Dining Services’ policy.

 

The University's decisions will be driven by the specific circumstances of a positive case or cases. UD has plans and resources for tracing and the isolation or quarantine of patients.

COVID-19 is a new disease, and there is limited information regarding risk factors. Based on currently available CDC information and clinical expertise, older adults (65 or older) and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions might be at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19. If you need to take extra precautions, requests for accommodations should be made to the Office of Disability Support Services (DSS). 

The University is relying on all members of our community, as well as visitors to campus, to help protect themselves and others by complying with the State of Delaware’s requirements and UD’s policies regarding face coverings and other measures. If a student is not wearing a face covering in the classroom, faculty members should ask them to wear one or leave the classroom. To anonymously report non-compliance with the requirements, individuals can use the UD Compliance Hotline or the LiveSafe App.

Students can contact the Center for Counseling & Student Development at (302) 831-2141 or (302) 831-1001 for after-hours emergencies. Faculty and staff may contact the Employee Assistance Program within Human Resources at (302) 831-2171 and/or their health care provider. 

Yes, hand sanitizer dispensers are strategically located at entrances and exits across the campus, and in other high-traffic areas.

Academics

If a student is ill or must stay home due to quarantine restrictions, the student should contact the instructor to work out an arrangement to make up the work. Instructors need to provide assistance to help students keep up with the content of the course. For example, UDIT has enabled all centrally scheduled classrooms to connect to Zoom, including a connection point for an instructor’s laptop to the in-room document camera. Instructors in centrally scheduled classrooms will be able to make Zoom recordings of their class session to post in Canvas or request UD Capture service for their classes.

To ensure compliance with FERPA, Zoom recordings that include the names or images of students in the class should only be shared with students enrolled in the same section of the class. UD Capture does not record student images, only an instructor’s laptop or document camera and audio in the room. As a courtesy, please notify students that your course is being recorded. As an alternative to providing recordings of lectures, instructors could provide copies of their PowerPoint slides and lecture notes.

UD Student Centers, the Library and some classrooms are available either by reserving a space online or by dropping in. As a reminder, masks must be work and physical distancing guidelines followed when using campus facilities.

 

The Student Centers have spaces available either by reserving space via their website or using available common spaces. Common spaces in Perkins Student Center are the Scrounge, East Lounge, West Lounge, lower-level seating, concourse seating, 3rd-floor conference table. Common spaces in Trabant are Daughterty Hall, Trabant Lounge, 2nd-floor seating, the food court and lower-level seating.

Standard grading and academic policies are in place for the spring 2022 semester. 

Yes. Faculty members will be available for office hours. Some faculty will hold in-person office hours for students to meet with them.  Others will hold virtual office hours for their students. Some may have a mixture of in-person and virtual office hours. Whether office hours are in-person or virtual, the office hours are provided as a time when students can ask questions and get help from their instructors. 

 

During your time as a Blue Hen, you may be presented with the opportunity to enroll in online or hybrid classes. 

Synchronous classes are facilitated online, but you still meet “live” with your instructor and classmates during the designated times in your class schedule. Asynchronous classes are facilitated online without a scheduled meeting time with your instructor and classmates. Asynchronous learning allows you to engage with the course materials during times that are most convenient for your schedule. 

In Courses Search, online courses are designated as “ONLINE” in the location details. Synchronous online courses will display the days and times the class will meet; asynchronous classes are designated as “ASYN” in the day details. In WebReg, you will see “ONLINE” in the schedule field if the course is online. Those that are synchronous will have specific days and times listed as well. Those that are asynchronous will state “ASYN ONLINE.” Once registered, synchronous courses will appear in the calendar view. Asynchronous courses will only appear in the list of courses and not on the calendar view.

Yes, students may take up to two consecutive semesters but you must apply for the leave of absence each semester separately. For more information, visit: http://www1.udel.edu/registrar/policies-procedures/withdr-la-timeoff.html. Eligibility for merit aid requires continues enrollment at UD. If a student is approved for a leave of absence, the student would need to appeal to the financial aid office to have their merit aid considered for renewal. If an upperclass student has a guaranteed housing contract and does a leave of absence for the fall semester, then the application is defered to the spring. The student is still bound to the contract and guaranteed for spring housing.

All undergraduate students who apply for admission for Fall 2022 will be considered without submitting SAT or ACT scores. UD graduate programs have a decentralized admissions process, so individual graduate programs have their own admissions and test requirements. All program admissions requirements are available on each individual Graduate Program details webpage, under “Program Admission Requirements”. Tuition, Fees & Scholarships

While the delivery of courses may be different, the University is committed to maintaining the high quality of instruction that students expect from UD to earn their degree. UD’s distinguished faculty continue to teach these courses, and the course curricula continue to prioritize the learning outcomes that faculty have established. In fact, the cost for online instruction is actually higher, reflecting the expense of computer equipment, software, instructional technology expertise and other needs. UD has invested significantly in education technology over the summer to ensure that students can continue their academic progress and graduate on time; those higher costs are not being passed on to students.

The University’s in-state tuition rate is lower due to the financial support provided by Delaware taxpayers. UD receives an annual operating appropriation from the state of Delaware, most of which is used to reduce the cost of tuition for Delaware-resident students. This is an investment that the state is making in the University every year to support resident students. This is the same tuition model that is used by publicly supported universities nationwide.

The differential fee reflects the significant investment that the University has made and continues to make in faculty expertise, enhanced technology and other resources in those disciplines to optimize student outcomes. Students in those programs continue to benefit from those investments, both during their time at UD and in the labor market after graduation.

Campus Life

Yes, residence halls are operating at full capacity.

The University does not require post-travel testing. 

Shuttle buses are operating at full capacity. All riders are required to wear masks. Please use the DoubleMap bus tracker to track all active buses. http://udshuttle.doublemap.com/map

Guided and self-guided tours are now available through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Both have limited capacity and require registration—found at udel.edu/visitUD. Virtual tours are also available on the Visit UD page.

Residence hall community members are not permitted to host guests in their residence hall unless they are University of Delaware students. 

COVID-positive students and those who need to quarantine due to an exposure are encouraged to return to their homes to isolate or quarantine as their situations dictate; those who need to remain on campus will be assigned an appropriate isolation or quarantine space where they will remain for 7 days. If the University is required to close due to a COVID outbreak resulting in the closing of the residence halls, necessary account adjustments will be made at that time.

Dining Services has partnered with Density, a real-time people counting solution, to provide this information to the campus community.

All students living in a traditional on-campus residence hall will be required to purchase one of the available on-campus Weekly meal plans and were automatically assigned and billed for the 14 Weekly plan. Students can choose to keep the 14 Weekly or change their plan to another Weekly meal plan. Students who will be living off campus or in University Courtyard, One Easton and family housing are not required to purchase a meal plan, but still have the option to sign up for one. Meal plan add-ons for all meal plan holders will also be available from off-campus partners’ Good Uncle, for food delivery on and off campus, and Home Chef, for cook-at-home meal kits. The University no longer requires the completion of the online form for domestic and international travel (including level 4 countries); however, all travelers will need to be up to date with their vaccinations for travel.

On May 21, 2021, UD launched Phase 4 of research operations. Phase 4 allows for all on-campus research to be permitted, including undergraduate research, computational research, in-person human subjects research, and extension/outreach activities. No application is required.  Please note that shuttered buildings/facilities need to be approved for reopening before personnel can enter.

No. Effective July 1, 2020, the vacation accrual limits outlined in the Vacation Accrual and Use Policy have been temporarily suspended through December 31, 2022. Eligible employees will be permitted to accrue vacation leave in excess of the limits outlined in the policy. Accrual limits will be restored effective January 1, 2023, and any excess vacation leave for current employees will be forfeited at that time. The accrual limits outlined in the Vacation Accrual and Use Policy will still apply for the purposes of vacation payout upon separation from the University (up to 40 days for employees with 21+ years of service).

COVID Alert DE App

COVID Alert DE is a smartphone app that will let users know if they have been in close contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. The app supports the efforts of the Delaware Division of Public Health and the University of Delaware to limit the spread of the virus in the community. The app was developed by NearForm, in partnership with the State of Delaware, using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology provided by Apple and Google. 

The COVID Alert DE app notifies users of potential exposure to the virus, even if they are not experiencing symptoms, so they can act quickly and take the steps needed to protect themselves and others.

The simple-to-use app is available to everyone who lives, works or attends college in Delaware. It is available in the App Store and Google Play. The app is free to download and use.

Everyone 18 and older living, working or attending college in Delaware and using an Android or Apple phone is strongly encouraged to download and use COVID Alert DE. The more people who use the COVID Alert DE app, the more effective it is at providing timely information and slowing the spread of COVID-19. 

Several states have similar apps, and more will be launching their apps soon. The apps are expected to be compatible with each other. You should use the app for the state where you are living right now and where you expect to be tested for COVID, if necessary. 

The COVID Alert DE app generates random Bluetooth keys that change every 10 to 20 minutes. Smartphones with the app will share these random keys anonymously if they are in close proximity (within 6 feet for 15 minutes or more). An app user who later tests positive for COVID-19 will be contacted by a public health worker and given a code, which is then entered into the app. The app then alerts all other app users who were in close proximity to that person since the date the positive person was tested for COVID or developed symptoms. No personal information or identifying data is shared. 

Once you’ve downloaded the app, you need to enable exposure notifications so the app can exchange random Bluetooth keys anonymously when you are in close contact with other app users. You don’t need to do anything else unless you receive a positive test for COVID or receive an alert that you may have been in close contact with a COVID-positive person. 

 

No, the app does not track or record your location. It only detects whether you have been in close contact with another person who is also using the app.

 

The COVID Alert DE app does not collect or share any personal information that can identify you, so your identity can never be revealed to anyone. At all times, you are in control and remain anonymous. You decide whether to opt-in to receive alerts, share demographic information or allow app usage data to be collected. You can delete the app or turn off alerts at any time.

 

No. The app does not collect identifying information or the users’ location, so it cannot tell you how you were exposed to the virus.
