Winning careers

With constant advances in technology and the surge in performance data available from athletes, the sports industry is in need of professionals who can make sense of these metrics. As a result, sport performance analytics is one of the fastest-growthing fields in athletics, fitness and health. Analysts in this field transform the way athletes train and compete while preventing injury. Sport performance analytics requires a strong background in data science, statistical modeling and critical thinking skills. To coaches and teams, analytics is a way for them to fine-tune training and performance, but to analysts, sport analytics is a perfect blend of data science and sport science that allows athletes and teams to achieve a competitive advantage.

What’s special about this program?

In addition to core competencies in math, computer science and statistics courses, students in the sport performance analytics program here at UD will enhance their statistical knowledge by applying their technical skills to athletics.

Our unique program provides students with the tools to collect, analyze and interpret player performance data so that decision-makers, such as coaches and athletic trainers, can make data-driven decisions for their teams or athletes. Our students build a strong foundation in statistical theory, complemented by hands-on experience with applied programming and modeling tools and a sport performance analytics internship experience. With the opportunity to take coursework in analytical statistics, predictive modeling, sport management and game studies, students graduate ready to work at the intersection of sports and technology.

Graduates of this program have career opportunities ranging from quantitative sports analysts and data scientists to game operations associates and market researchers. Students with a sport performance analytics degree can thrive in professional and college sports, sports media companies, wearable technology companies, sports gambling companies, and sporting goods manufacturers. Graduates are positioned for a high-paying career after graduation.
