Networking at the touch of a button
You’ve probably heard about the UD Career Acceleration Network (UD CAN), but are you reaping the full benefits of it? This free platform exclusively for UD alumni and students offers multiple ways to connect with others in your industry—through messages, discussion boards and requests for meetings with not only students, but also with mentors who can help you. (Plus, there’s a really helpful job board with postings for UD alumni!)
Here are some ways that UD alumni are already using the platform, with room to expand into more alumni-to-alumni networking.
Q&A with Alex LaGrotta, EG14, Manufacturing Engineer, Valcor Engineering

UD: What has been your biggest benefit of using UD CAN?
AL: There are a lot of upcoming and recent graduates who are looking for advice and could use a hand answering questions on things like networking, résumé building and looking for their first job, and UD CAN is a great way to help these students out (and network at the same time)!
UD: What has been the most rewarding experience that has come out of using UD CAN?
AL: The thing that's most rewarding for me is seeing how genuinely thankful and appreciative the students I talk to are. I can really tell that my time is appreciated, and that at the end of the phone call or Zoom chat, I've had an impact on this person's outlook or future trajectory. And they're not the only ones benefiting. I always enjoy the conversations I have with alumni, getting to chat about our career paths and interests, and making new connections, too.
UD: Can you share your advice for other young alumni on how to best take advantage of UD CAN?
AL: Sign up and get started! I've had a ton of helpful and insightful conversations with students and alumni, and these meetings have been amazing opportunities to share advice, learn about others interests and careers, and network with your fellow UD peers. This platform can be helpful in a lot of ways, not just for young alumni seeking career guidance, but for those volunteering as well!
Here’s what other young alumni have to say about UD CAN:

“I have volunteered to conduct teleconference meetings with UD students for the past few years now. The work has been rewarding in that I am giving back what I received when I was in their shoes. I am still cognizant of the value in making connections with individuals who have been where I aspire to go, and I find joy in being that resource for others.”
–Candace Holmes, AS04, Deputy Attorney General, Family Division, Delaware Department of Justice

“I enjoy mentoring and love giving back to UD by helping to guide students in their career aspirations, whether it be by giving them a glimpse into what my job is like or sharing my thoughts on interview and résumé tips. I encourage students and young alumni to continue to leverage this resource, especially in these times of remote working where the job market and on-campus recruiting activities have had to change so much.
I primarily see the UD CAN website as a place where students network with alumni, and I think it would be interesting to experiment with more interaction between alumni on the UD CAN website as well.”
–Amy Quach, EG14, External Manufacturing Engineer, Merck

“I have been contacted twice on UD CAN by fellow Blue Hen social workers. It was cool that this website brought us together and I was able to assist and give advice to individuals who are new to the field. I ended up speaking to one person on the phone and we had a really good conversation about social work jobs and different positions within the field. I am very passionate about social work and the profession as a whole, and am so happy and willing to help those who need it.”
–Rina Bronstein, EHD12, School Social Worker at Wisdom Lane Middle School
