Stuart Binder-Macleod, the Edward L. Ratledge Professor of Physical Therapy, is giving one more lecture as he ends a remarkable career at the University of Delaware. Binder-Macleod will deliver the 51st Mary McMillan Lecture on Jan. 16 as part of the 2021 American Physical Therapy Association Founders’ Day Weekend Lectures

Being selected for the Mary McMillan Lecture is the most distinguished honor an active APTA member physical therapist or life member can receive. This award recognizes those who have demonstrated exemplary skills in the areas of administration, education, patient care, management, and research.

Binder-Macleod’s topic is, “What I Know: The Value of Mentoring and Leadership.” During his talk, he will discuss the critical role that mentoring has played in his own professional development and the important role mentoring plays in developing the next generation of physical therapy clinicians, researchers and administrators.

It’s a topic Binder-Macleod certainly can discuss with authority, as he mentored more than a dozen physical therapy doctoral students who have gone on to professorships around the country and internationally.

While at UD, Binder-Macleod’s efforts as chair of the Department of Physical Therapy from 1998 to 2014 not only grew the number of faculty hires and expanded research opportunities in the program, they paved the way for the Department of Physical Therapy to receive the No. 1 ranking in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in 2016.

He also has served as principal investigator for 10 research grants from the National Institutes of Health, including the Delaware CTR ACCEL program, which has brought in more than $40 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health and $10 million from the state of Delaware while also deepening the state’s framework of translational healthcare.

The Stuart and Catriona Binder-Macleod Therapy Enrichment Fund supports incoming or current Doctor of Physical Therapy students who aspire to pursue a PhD in physical therapy at the University. Donations in recognition of Binder-Macleod’s McMillan award are being accepted here
