ELI’s Accelerate-U Delaware program provides freshman international students transition support

International students beginning their undergraduate journey at UD face the exciting yet challenging transition of leaving behind their support network and familiar learning environments. To help students adjust to their new life on campus, the English Language Institute (ELI) offers a free transition program for directly admitted international students: Accelerate-U Delaware (A-UD).

All international students are encouraged to join A-UD in their first semester to support their cultural, academic and linguistic adjustment. Participants take up to 16 credits, with at least 12 in classes coordinated by the ELI. Small class sizes ensure personalized academic support and foster strong connections with professors, boosting confidence and success in University courses.

“The small class sizes made the transition smoother. I could relate to other international students, which helped me feel at home,” said Conny Viehmann, a former A-UD student from Germany.

Students are also paired with a dedicated A-UD adviser, in addition to their UD academic adviser, for added guidance.

“The support I got from my A-UD adviser is what made me go through the fall semester with an ease of mind,” said another former A-UD student.

Finally, A-UD fosters community, connecting international students navigating similar hurdles.

“A-UD helped me tremendously when I came to UD. Coming from the other side of the world, the program helped me create new friendships and transition to college in the States more easily,” said Casper Nerpin, a former A-UD student from Sweden.
