Workshop explores research-practice partnerships in schools

The Partnership for Public Education invites the UD community to a workshop on Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Trabant University Center, to hear from the Detroit Partnership for Education Equity & Research (PEER). This exemplary research-practice partnership is working together to address chronic absenteeism in the city.

Connect, Collaborate, Inspire: Exploring the Transformative Power of a Research Practice Partnership Addressing Absenteeism is presented free of charge. University faculty and education leaders interested in collaboration and research-practice partnerships are especially encouraged to attend.

The event aims to have attendees:

  • Learn about a successful research-practice partnership model in action.
  • Discuss effective strategies for strong partnerships between researchers and educators.
  • Network with local researchers and educators.

Guest speakers:

  • Sarah Winchell Lenhoff leads Detroit PEER, part of Wayne State University's College of Education, which collaboratively addresses essential questions in Detroit's public schools. Committed to providing accessible knowledge, PEER bridges academia and practical application for impactful improvements in education.
  • Rev. Larry Simmons founded Every School Day Counts Detroit, which seeks to reduce chronic absenteeism in Detroit public schools from 56% to 15% by 2027. A longstanding member of Detroit’s service community, Simmons serves on the advisory board for Detroit PEER and as executive director of the Brightmoor Alliance. He recently retired as pastor of Baber Memorial A.M.E. Church.
