Martina Bishop, custodial technician who worked in the Perkins Student Center at the University of Delaware for several years, passed away on March 2, 2023, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She was 58.

Ms. Bishop, who joined the UD staff in 2019, was described by her manager Verlyn Rayfield as “a private lady with a welcoming and inviting personality,” adding “No one could deny how much she loved her family.”

Rayfield, custodial manager in Facilities, said Ms. Bishop was “a mother figure to her coworkers, especially in the Perkins Student Center. She would scold them lovingly to clean their area and give them sound advice. She was a very honest person—almost to a fault. If you asked her something, you’d better be prepared for the answer. She would tell you her truth in a mild manner and then say something like, ‘But don’t worry about it, it’s going to be all right. God’s got you.’

“Martina had a smile that would calm nervousness, and she would follow suit by calming the situation with her words,” Rayfield said. “She would go the extra mile to let people know that they are cared about and asked nothing in return. A lady who would show up by surprise when you expected no one… She is richly missed, and Heaven is greatly blessed. A lesson from her life narrative would be to live (travel and be your best), learn (be astute and listen) and love (always giving 100%) to the fullest in this life. Love never dies. Her motto--words from her daughter— was 'Live in the moment; laugh about everything; and regret nothing.’”

Born in Bridgeville, Delaware, Ms. Bishop graduated from Thomas McKean High School. Before joining UD, she worked at Delaware Charter, Commerce Bank and Christiana Care.

Her many hobbies included cooking, dancing with her grandkids, watching her favorite football team (the Steelers), going to the Capital Jazz Festival, taking cruises and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
