In Memoriam: Quincy Harmon

Campus community remembers sophomore biological sciences major

Quincy Alexander Harmon, a sophomore majoring in biological sciences at the University of Delaware, passed away after battling cancer on Sept. 25, 2022. He was 22.

Mr. Harmon transferred to Delaware for the 2021-22 academic year after studying at Drexel University. He was on leave from UD this semester.

“On behalf of the University community, I extend our condolences to Mr. Harmon’s family and friends,” said Adam Cantley, dean of students. “A selfless young man, Quincy demonstrated throughout his brief life a deep commitment to helping others. His dedication and strength serve as models for us all. He will be greatly missed.”

From Middletown, Delaware, Mr. Harmon was a graduate of St. Georges Technical High School. He worked in real estate and customer service as an appraiser assistant for Harmon Management Group and in the research departments of two children’s hospitals, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Nemours Children’s Hospital.

On his LinkedIn page, he wrote, “My passion for science and personal experience with cancer inspired my drive to pursue cancer research.”

Em Rowe, Mr. Harmon’s adviser, called him “an incredibly strong, resilient and empathic person,” whose goal was to become a cancer researcher so others would not have to face the challenges he had in his own struggle with the disease. “Despite his diagnosis, Quincy excelled in his first year here at UD, earning an impressively high GPA and making the Dean’s List. I will always remember the conversations I had with Quincy as being both powerful and lighthearted. He had such a caring spirit, was always so kind and respectful, and exuded optimism. The loss of Quincy is a loss to all of us — the world of science, his friends and family, and the entire UD community. I am honored to have been given the opportunity to know him.”

In 2018, Mr. Harmon was featured in an article in Out and About Magazine about his decision to use the wish he was granted by the Make-a-Wish Foundation to give back to Nemours. According to the article, as a patient undergoing chemotherapy, he had a hard time relaxing in chairs that were designed for smaller patients. He used his wish to provide more comfortable chairs that could be used by both children and their parents. He and his family worked with the hospital’s designers, and the hospital christened the first “Q-Loungers” in his honor in May 2017. Make-A-Wish purchased four chairs, the manufacturer donated an additional chair and a Wilmington-based foundation called Live Like Lukas donated funds to purchase about a dozen more. The Make-a-Wish Foundation featured Mr. Harmon and his gift in a 2017 video.

A memorial service for Mr. Harmon will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 21, at Seeds of Greatness, 828 Frenchtown Rd., New Castle, Delaware.
