Saturday Symposium: Murders in the Rue Morgue
October 25, 2021
Join alumni and friends on Oct. 30 for a look at Edgar Alan Poe and the REP’s play
The University of Delaware's College of Arts and Sciences invites the community to a Saturday Symposium program, Investigating The Murders in the Rue Morgue: Perspectives on Poe and the Play on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to noon. The event is free and open to the public and will take place online via Zoom.
The speakers will explore various aspects of the UD REP’s production of Edgar Alan Poe’s The Murders in the Rue Morgue — from literary aspects, to myths and legends about Poe’s local history, to how a piece of fiction makes its way to a spine-tingling audio presentation. The REP production is presented as an audio play, running Oct. 27 through Nov. 14, and is also free and available to the public.
Speakers for the Saturday Symposium include:
• Tom Leitch, professor, English, on "The Undead Poe."
• Mary Torbey, curator, Newark History Museum, on "Poe in Newark: Fact or Legend?"
• UD REP panel: Michael Gotch, adapter and director; Eileen Smitheimer, sound designer; Ryan Touhey, composer, on "From Page to Sound Stage."
The program will provide ample opportunity for questions and answers with the panel after the presentations.
Registration is required. For information about the Saturday Symposium event and to register, please visit: https://www.cas.udel.edu/saturday-symposium. Other questions can be addressed via email to saturday-symposium@udel.edu or by calling 302-831-6075.
