The Delaware Environmental Institute is now accepting applications for an undergraduate research opportunity in environmental soil chemistry. University of Delaware students with an interest in soil chemistry, sea level rise and climate change are encouraged to apply.

As sea levels rise, coastal soils are being salinized at increasing rates. This increase may impact phosphorus (P) cycling in soil and further affect water quality in coastal regions. While the impacts of varying degrees of salinization on P cycling have been well studied, P speciation remains poorly understood. Thus, through this project and under the direction of Chunhao Gu of the Environmental Soil Chemistry Lab, the student will evaluate the impact of sea level rise and soil salinization on P transformation using a variety of chemistry techniques.

The student will be a member of the multi-institutional 2021-2022 Project WiCCED undergraduate research cohort, funded by the National Science Foundation. In addition, to research responsibilities the student will be expected to attend related professional development events, including but not limited to career retreats, communication workshops and end of the year symposia.

Compensation for this opportunity will be in the form of a $4500 student stipend.
