In Memoriam: Samantha Racz

Campus remembers award-winning visual communication student

Samantha A. Racz, a University of Delaware student from Whippany, New Jersey, died in a fatal car crash on Jan. 16 in Hanover Township, New Jersey. She was 21.

“Our sincere condolences go out to the members of Samantha’s family and to all those who knew and loved her,” said Adam D. Cantley, dean of students at the University. “Our campus community is diminished by the loss of this vibrant young woman who brightened the lives of so many.”

Samantha Racz

At UD, Ms. Racz was a junior, majoring in visual communication, with a minor in communication. She is remembered for her sense of fashion, her upbeat and cheerful attitude and her ability to make friends laugh.

Faculty members in the Department of Art and Design shared this tribute: “Samantha’s personality and presence was felt immediately in any studio or classroom she entered. Her positive attitude was infectious, sparking conversation, bringing up the mood of any class and charging the room with a spirit of creative inspiration. Her spirit was one that put everyone at ease and created a sense of comfort within an atmosphere of critical dialogue. We are all deeply saddened that we are unable to experience Sam's continued growth as a creative person.”

A member of several student organizations at the University, Ms. Racz was active in the Gamma Phi Beta sorority, and her “big sister” Ali Smith, a senior at UD, said, “Sam’s happiness was able to shine not only through her radiant smile and infectious laugh, but through her actions and her artistic talents as well. She had the rare and special gift of being able to bring so much sunshine into any room on even the rainiest of days. She was, and forever will be, an instant spark of happiness to me, her family and to all the lives she touched."

A 2018 graduate of Whippany Park High School and recipient of numerous art awards, she worked at Lucco restaurant in Florham Park, New Jersey.

Ms. Racz is survived by her parents Gina Marie Racz and Richard Racz; brothers Justin, Brandon and Nicholas and sisters-in-law Gina and Kristy; and grandmother Janet Passariello, as well as aunts, uncles, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Funeral services were held privately, and a memorial service is being planned for a future date.

A Gamma Phi Beta scholarship fund has been established in Ms. Racz’ memory. To donate to the fund in her memory, go the Gamma Phi Beta Foundation webpage, enter “Samantha Racz” in section 3, and click “Pass Through” in section 5.
