University community reports recent publications, honors

For the Record provides information about recent professional activities and honors of University of Delaware faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Recent publications and honors include the following:

Publications

The current issue of The Gissing Journal (Volume LIV, No. 4, October 2020), an international scholarly periodical established in 1965, edited by Markus Neacey and devoted to studying the works and the world of the Victorian author George Gissing, contains an article by Margaret Stetz, Mae and Robert Carter Professor of Women's Studies and professor of humanities. Her article is part of a special supplement, titled Gissing in Vogue, that was organized and created by Tom Ue, who describes the supplement as follows: "Gissing in Vogue brings together 20 contributors from different parts of the world in a shared conversation about fashion." In "Art and Dress in 'A Victim of Circumstances,'" Stetz examines one of Gissing's short stories from 1893, which focuses on two male painters, and finds that it "teaches its audience how to read dress and, moreover, shows why this is a worthy occupation for men, as well as women—and even for artists."

Honors

Cioaba also serves on the editorial board of Electronic Journal of Linear Algebra, which is ILAS's free and open access journal and is the editor for featured articles for IMAGE, which is ILAS's semiannual bulletin.

Second-year MFA candidate Connor Longo served as a teaching artist for the month of June with the 2020 Arts Work Summer Youth Apprenticeship Program, sponsored by the Urban Artists Exchange (UAE), Wilmington, Delaware’s first major “Creative Placemaking” project.

Two alumni of UD’s visual communications program, both Class of 1983, won honors at the Graphis Photography 2020 awards: Craig Cutler won the platinum award, and Laurie Frankel won gold for her entries “Underwater Dandelion” and “Jasmine,” created for the client Vintner’s Daughter, which makes high-end beauty serum from natural products.
