UD international student community to gather Nov. 19 in Trabant University Center
Situated somewhere between midterms, the onset of cold, upcoming holidays, and approaching deadlines for final projects and exams, early November in Newark can easily slip by as the non-descript passage between this and that. Yet, for those seeking a contrast to the greyscale of this in-between time, a notable accent of color can be found in the Festival of Nations.
A yearly event organized by the University of Delaware’s English Language Institute, the Festival of Nations brings the world to Newark with all the color, variety and excitement one might expect at such a multicultural affair. Split into three parts — a culture fair, an international fashion show, and a talent show — the Festival of Nations features the talents and tastes of people from 20-to-30 countries each year as international students from across the University come together to showcase the unique features of their home countries. Some 700-to-800 guests typically attend, filling the multi-purpose rooms in Trabant University Center with the excitement and energy.
This year, Festival of Nations will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, part of UD Global Month. For the talent show, Tim Kim, assistant director for ELI student life, said to expect a variety of dance and musical performances. Among the many expected acts are Kamaal, an Indian hip hop group; Afrodisiac, an African dance group; CresHENdo acapella; and KoDACC, the Korean Dance and Culture Club.

ELI alumna Gamze Guzel described the Festival of Nations as all about “multicultural celebration and heartwarming friendship.”
Guzel speaks with some authority. A four time model representing her home country of Turkey in the Festival of Nations fashion show, Guzel said the fashion show is definitely her favorite part of the event. She encourages others who have not experienced the Festival of Nations to attend.
“I definitely advise all of my friends who have never seen the event before,” she said. “I simply tell them that it is a perfect way to experience diversity and discover different cultures from all over the world.”
