Writing Center workshops

Spring semester sessions open to undergraduate and graduate students

The University of Delaware Writing Center is offering several workshops this semester to help undergraduate and graduate students with issues that writers often face. Held in room 017 of Morris Library, the workshops are free; register at the website at the bottom of this article.

"Brainstorming Is Half the Battle," 3-4 p.m. March 26 and noon-1 p.m. March 27. This workshop is designed for students to learn how brainstorming can help them write a good, interesting and well-conceived  essay/project. Students will learn what kind of brainstorming methods can support them on their journey toward completing a compelling project.

"Entering the Conversation," 3-4 p.m., April 8 and April 15. Do you have trouble crafting an argument? Are thesis statements your nemesis? Contrary to what your high school English teacher said, thesis statements aren’t formulaic and aren’t always just one sentence. This workshop will help students develop a strong, conceptual thesis statement that will enable them to enter a scholarly conversation with confidence.

"So You’ve Written Your First Draft," 1-2 p.m., March 20 and April 10. For students who just received feedback on a first draft and don't know what to do next, this workshop on revision will help. It will discuss understanding and analyzing constructive feedback, addressing big ideas and tiny details, writing with clarity and concision, outlining tactics, proofreading and
more.

"Writing Professionally (Not Professionalistically)," 3-4 p.m., March 20 and March 27. This workshop will provide a practical guide to eliminating poor writing habits, including writing in clichés, poor or inappropriate word choice, informal voice, thesaurus abuse and poorly executed citations. It will also provide a behind-the-scenes look into what unnerves writing instructors.
