Foltyn seminar examines environment and health

"You Are What Your Bugs Eat" features gastroenterology expert Dr. Gary Wu

The University of Delaware College of Health Sciences will host the Foltyn Seminar on Thursday, March 21, from 4-5 p.m., in the Audion at the Tower at STAR. The seminar which will examine environmental factors that are having a profound impact on our health.

In "You Are What Your Bugs Eat: Diet and Gut Microbiome in Health and Disease," Dr. Gary D. Wu, a gastroenterology professor in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, will examine the connection between the complex microbial communities inside our digestive tract, our environments and our well-being.

Dr. Wu is the director of the Penn Center for Nutritional Science and Medicine, and co-Director of the PennCHOP Microbiome Program at the Perelman School of Medicine at Penn. He is the associate chief for research in the Division of Gastroenterology and is also the associate director of the Center for Molecular Studies in Digestive and Liver Disease. He is director and chair of the Scientific Advisory Board for the American Gastroenterological Association Center for Gut Microbiome Research and Education and is an elected member of both the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the American Association of Physicians.

The annual Foltyn seminar is made possible by the generosity of Theodore J. Foltyn and Kathi Hetrick Foltyn, University of Delaware alumni. The couple established this endowed fund for the purpose of recruiting outstanding speakers in areas including behavioral health, nutrition, wellness and disease prevention.
