Jeffrey Garland to step down as vice president, University secretary
Effective Jan. 1, 2020, Jeffrey Garland will be stepping down as vice president and University secretary of the University of Delaware. Garland has been in this position since August 2012.
During his tenure, Garland assisted the UD Board of Trustees in updating and modernizing policies and procedures to enhance the availability of relevant information, and new programs and events were created to promote robust Trustee engagement and support. As director of the University’s Commencement and Convocation events, Mr. Garland pioneered the innovative use of multimedia strategies in order to focus these ceremonies on the students graduating and their successes.

After joining the University, Garland also assumed responsibilities for state and local government relations. In this capacity, he built a new team of government relations professionals who actively promote the importance of the University and align its goals with the priorities of the state and municipalities such as Newark and Lewes. He was also responsible for overseeing Archives and Records Management.
“Jeff Garland has been a valuable asset to this University and our Board of Trustees,” University President Dennis Assanis said. “We appreciate his service and contributions to help advance UD during a time of great progress and transition, and I know everyone joins me in wishing him well in his future endeavors.”
An announcement regarding reassignment of responsibilities pertaining to the University secretary and government relations role will be forthcoming.
Garland commented, “I am honored to have had the opportunity to serve the University during the last several years. It has been very exciting to work with the UD administration, trustees and greater community to help advance a dynamic vision for the future of the University.”
