Vice President Chris Lucier to step down next year

Chris Lucier, vice president of enrollment management at the University of Delaware, has announced his plans to step down, effective May 22. He will serve on a reduced basis beginning Feb. 1.

“During his tenure at the University of Delaware, Chris Lucier has led our enrollment management team to great success, setting records both for the academic quality of incoming students and for the size of the first-year classes,” UD President Dennis Assanis said. “Chris has worked tirelessly to diversify our undergraduate student body and has implemented key programs to ensure the success of our students and provide new opportunities for them. These achievements have helped position UD well for the future. On a personal note, Eleni and I will miss Chris and his wife, Rosie, and wish the very best to them and their family.”

Chris Lucier, who has served as vice president of enrollment management since 2014, will step down next year.

Provost Robin Morgan said, “Working closely with faculty and staff colleagues, Chris has led a creative team that works very hard to improve access to this University and to assure success for those who enroll here. The influence of Chris and the units reporting to him extends from prospective students in middle and high school to first-year and transfer students all the way to graduating seniors. Always, Chris has been an effective advocate for student success and success here at UD, and he will be missed.”

Decisions about interim leadership of enrollment management and the search for Lucier’s replacement will be made soon.

“I am proud of our ability to meet or exceed our admissions goals and our advances in promoting student success from precollege to graduation,” Lucier said. “The credit for these accomplishments belongs with the dedicated Division of Enrollment Management team, and the committed staff and faculty in the colleges and among the other central offices. Our successes are testaments to what the UD community can accomplish working as a team.”

Lucier joined UD in July 2014, with responsibility for identifying, attracting, yielding, funding and ensuring the success of UD's undergraduate students. He has direct oversight of the offices of Admissions, Student Financial Services and the University Registrar.

During Lucier’s tenure:

  • Undergraduate enrollment has increased from 17,410 to 18,221 (with a record class entering in fall 2017 and this year’s entering class setting academic records), as well as an increase in enrollment of undergraduate students of color from 19.4 percent to 21.8 percent and an increase among Delawareans of color by 25.4 percent.
  • International undergraduate student enrollment has increased by 41 percent, to 951 international students representing 67 countries.
  • A new program offering first-year students the opportunity to spend their first semester abroad -- The World Scholars Program – now offers UD student experiences at universities in Rome, Madrid, New Zealand and, next year, Greece.
  • New programs, such as Delaware in DC, Delaware Innovation Fellows, Community Engagement Scholars and others, were established to enable students to enrich their experience with opportunities in politics, entrepreneurship, community service and more.
  • The Blue Hen Success Collaborative, a key initiative to promote student achievement, was initiated, promoting great academic advisement along with a coordinated care network to ensure that students receive the support they need to succeed.

Before joining UD, Lucier led undergraduate admissions and enrollment strategy at the University of Vermont for seven years. Previously he was director of recruitment and operations in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he earlier served as senior associate director of recruitment and marketing.

Over his career. he has presented at regional and national conferences on a range of admissions and enrollment topics, including diversity, leveraging technology to create efficiency and improve service, building an EM team and supporting student veterans.

Lucier began his enrollment management career in 2001 after serving in the U.S. Army for 21 years. During his Army career, he served in primarily armor and cavalry assignments in the United States and in Germany, and he was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal three times.
