Giving Tuesday at UD

UD focuses fundraising on Student Crisis Fund and special projects

Editor's note: Although Giving Tuesday is over, those who wish to support the Student Crisis Fund and other projects can still make a gift.

Many University of Delaware students face adversity at one point or another – whether that be a difficult course or a personal struggle. Some students experience more severe, unforeseen, challenging situations — such as a natural disaster that destroys their home or the death of a parent — that cause extra financial burdens and threaten their chances of earning a degree.

When a catastrophe hits, the students can turn to the University’s Student Crisis Fund, which provides monetary support for students in dire straits.

“College is a time of excitement and learning for students. At the same time, there can be situations and crises that influence a student’s ability to be successful,” said Adam Cantley, interim dean of students. “The Student Crisis Fund allows us to help students when these issues arise. The fund supports students who have been victims of crime, experienced food or home insecurities or an unexpected family emergency. By giving back, Blue Hens will directly impact our students in times of need and encourage their continued success at UD.”

This year, for Giving Tuesday (Nov. 27), nationally recognized on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, UD is calling on the Blue Hen community to give back to the students who need it most by supporting the Student Crisis Fund. Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.

In addition to the Student Crisis Fund, UD’s crowdfunding website, HenFunder, will include Giving Tuesday projects centered around multi-disciplinary experiential learning opportunities and specific college programs, such as the Lerner Women's Leadership Initiative, the Children’s Campus Outdoor Classrooms, the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Summer Scholars Fund and the UDairy Creamery.

“Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for the University to be part of a global effort to raise money for charitable causes while helping students right here on campus,” said Jim Dicker, UD’s vice president of development and alumni relations. “With the holidays upon us and folks getting into the giving spirit, it’s a great time to remind Blue Hens and UD supporters that they can make a difference for so many students and faculty at the University.”
