University community reports recent presentations, honors

Presentations
Mohsen Badiey and Javier Garcia-Frias, both professors in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, presented an invited talk at the 176th meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, held Nov. 5-9, 2018, in Victoria, Canada. The talk, entitled “Identification of fish species in estuaries and rivers using recorded soundscape with supervised machine learning,” is published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, volume 144, issue 3, pt. 2, pp. 1777, September 2018.
Sebastian Cioaba, associate professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, visited Anhui University in Hefei, China, in November 2018. He was a plenary speaker at the International Workshop on Algebraic Combinatorics and taught a short course in spectral graph theory to graduate students and researchers at Anhui University and University of Science and Technology, China.
Honors
Two professional staff members from the Division of Student Life have been elected to leadership positions in national and international organizations. Heather Maginnis, director of Orientation and Transition Programs, has been elected president of NODA (the Association for Orientation, Transition and Retention in Higher Education), which includes one-year terms as president-elect, president and past-president. This position serves as the chief officer directing all agents in carrying out the processes and services of the association. NODA provides education, leadership and professional development in the fields of college student orientation, transition and retention at more than 700 institutions of higher education throughout the world. Vincent Jackson, coordinator in the Office of Student Conduct, has been elected director of Region VII for the Association of College Unions International (ACUI). The position serves as the chief administrator in determining and advancing strategic directions within the field of student affairs at institutions of higher education in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Quebec and the District of Columbia.
