Connecting students with alumni

UD Job Shadow program helps students learn about alumni careers

The University of Delaware Career Services Center, in conjunction with The Office of Development and Alumni Relations, launched the UD Job Shadow program during the 2017 Winter Session. This new initiative connects current students with alumni so they can learn about the careers and industries of fellow Blue Hens.

Students submitted more than 175 applications for opportunities to meet with alumni, and more than 40 UD alumni volunteered to host current students for a half-day career shadowing experience. Students spent time learning about careers in organizations such as IKEA, Showtime Networks, Bimbo Bakeries USA, Tipping Point Media, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and many more.

This program gave students insight into the world of work and allowed them to enhance their professional networks. Participating students reported that they enjoyed the experience and were appreciative of the chance to learn about a variety of companies and meet successful alumni in a professional setting.

Additionally,  Blue Hen alumni said they found the experience rewarding as well, with one alumnus saying, “Getting to spend a day with a bright, enthusiastic UD Student and learn about their interests/aspirations and to share some of my professional experiences was very gratifying.”

The program is expected to be repeated and expanded for the upcoming academic year.  Opportunities for alumni to post job shadowing experiences will be available in the early fall 2017 through Handshake.
