How Employers Can Recruit and Connect with UD Students

Are you an employer looking to recruit at UD? In this new remote work environment and due to health and safety concerns, many students are choosing to connect with employers online. The University has followed suit by planning a full calendar of virtual fairs for Fall 2021. Here are a list of virtual events you can also consider:

  • Industry Insight Nights: Host a 30-minute session on Tuesday or Thursday evening on topics about your company culture and insights, career opportunities, day-to-day operations and more! For example, a UD alum from the The NY Giants recently hosted an Industry Insight Night providing career information, resources and ideas about the sports entertainment industry for more than 60 students. Additionally, ExxonMobil hosted a “day in the life” event with alumni present to answer questions about their experiences working with the organization.

  • A Virtual Day in the Life: Walk students through a day in the life at your organization. Ask interns about what a work day looks like for them, share a video created by your organization, walk through your workplace on a virtual call to show them around the office or showcase the roles of alumni.

  • Employer Tech Takeover: Take over our social media channels by contributing your expertise in a certain career or industry area. Conduct an interview for a blog post, which can be shared on all our social media channels and highlighted in our career community weekly newsletters.

  • Career Panels: Reach out to your career community liaison to see if there are career panel opportunities for your company. You can bring together a group of UD alumni from your organization to share about their career journey. For example, Prep with the Pros, career panels for the Agriculture & Environment community, features employers or alumni to speak about their specific roles and career paths. Our past panels featured 14 panelists and 132 student attendees. The topic areas were wildlife ecology and conservation, agribusiness, earth science and animal science.
  • Employer in Residence: Host 1:1 virtual office hour sessions where students can sign up for timeslots to get their resume reviewed, have a mock interview, practice their elevator pitch or just simply learn more about your organization.

  • Registered Student Organizations: Establish your brand on campus by reaching out directly to Registered Student Organizations (RSOs). Personally invite student members to a virtual event or offer to partner with them on one.

  • Speed Networking: Invite colleagues or alumni to participate in this event to share their experiences. Each rotation can offer personal insights, overviews on certain lines of business and industry overviews or discussion surrounding career readiness and how to succeed in your organization. For example, Speed Networking for Agriculture & Environment Students brought together employers and alumni to discuss professional development topics with current students to improve career readiness. General networking was offered at the end of the event to practice new skills and make professional connections.

If you are looking for more ways to interact with UD students, here are some extra recruitment tips and efforts that are proven to yield results:

  • Invite multiple co-curricular student organizations to your Industry Insight Night.
  • Sign up and attend one of our signature career fairs or meetups, and set up your virtual interviews for the day after the fair. Reach out to students via Handshake and invite them to attend a 1:1 or group session during the fair or meetup.
  • Bring together multiple universities to co-host a virtual recruiting event for your organization.
  • Offer a virtual career trek to your organization and allow us to share the session on our social media platforms.
  • Share your expertise in an interview for our blog UD Career Center News.
  • Set up an ambassador program with a current or former intern that is also a UD student. Let them use their social capital to gain additional skills and expand your campus presence.
  • Small numbers in an academic department that you’d like to target? Use the "Search and Message" function in Handshake to connect with students that have public profiles and invite them to apply to your opportunities.
