UD to host social work conference on the cultures of healing and innovative social work practice

In response to the needs of Delaware communities and beyond, the University of Delaware College of Education and Human Development will host a social work conference from 12 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 8, 2026, at Clayton Hall and Conference Center in Newark, Delaware.

Titled "Cultures of Healing: Innovative Pathways for Social Work Practice,” the conference will explore how cultural, developmental and systemic realities shape pathways to healing. Through expert focal sessions, an interactive panel and guided reflection, this event moves beyond "one-size-fits-all" interventions, diving into culturally responsive strategies for clients with complex, intersecting identities—from Indigenous child welfare and forced displacement to neurodivergence, music-based strategies and tech governance.

The conference will also feature a keynote presentation from Earl Smith, professor in UD’s Department of Women and Gender Studies and senior research scientist in the Center for the Study and Prevention of Gender-Based Violence. He will speak about “Pathways to Healing: Black Men and Intimate Partner Violence.”

Participants will network with other researchers and practitioners, learn about UD’s master of social work program and hear from UD faculty and invited speakers working in local and regional contexts. The conference will also offer 3.5 continuing education (CE) hours for practitioners.
