Join the University of Delaware’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) for a colloquium with Xiaoming Zhai, professor of science education and AI and founding director of the AI4STEM Education Center at the University of Georgia, from 1:50 to 2:50 p.m. on Sept. 30, 2026, in room 205 of Willard Hall Education Building.

Supported by the National Science Foundation, the Institute of Education Sciences and other agencies, Zhai’s research focuses on the use of AI and machine learning to transform science teaching, learning and assessment. He has published extensively in leading journals, including the Journal of Research in Science Teaching and Computers & Education, among many others. His research has earned him honors like the American Educational Research Association’s Technology as an Agent of Change in Teaching and Learning Early Career Award, a Humboldt Research Fellowship and a National Academy of Education/Spencer Award. Zhai also serves as the director of the National GENIUS Center. Before joining academia, Zhai was a high school physics teacher for nine years.

Zhai’s colloquium will critically examine the current landscape of AI in science assessment, highlighting its promises, pitfalls and the urgent questions it raises. His talk is titled “At the Crossroad: AI in Science Assessment.”

The colloquium, part of a year-long series hosted by CEHD’s School of Education, is free and open to the public. Audience members are also welcome to participate in a discussion with the speaker following the colloquium.
