Training program meets internationally recognized standards of quality

The University of Delaware Montessori Teacher Academy (UDMTA) has reached a significant milestone in its mission to prepare Montessori educators for schools across the Mid-Atlantic region. The program recently received approval from the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) for its Primary (ages 3-6) and Upper Elementary (ages 9-12) teacher education programs, expanding accredited offerings and strengthening Montessori teacher preparation opportunities in Delaware.

MACTE is the internationally recognized accrediting body for Montessori teacher education programs. Recognized by the U.S. Department of Education since 1995, it ensures programs meet rigorous standards for curriculum quality, faculty expertise, practicum experiences and educator preparation.

The achievement represents years of planning, curriculum development and continuous improvement in educator preparation. The expanded accreditation will help address the growing demand for qualified Montessori educators while creating opportunities for current and aspiring teachers to earn professional credentials within the region.

"This accreditation reflects the dedication of many people who have worked to build a high-quality Montessori teacher education program at the University of Delaware," said Linda Zankowsky, director of the UD Montessori Teacher Academy. "I am especially grateful to Melissa Sugzdinis and Audra Walsh, whose leadership was instrumental throughout the review process."

As interest in Montessori education continues to grow, the Academy's expanded accreditation provides educators with greater access to high-quality professional preparation and helps ensure Montessori classrooms are led by well-trained, credentialed teachers.
