UD senior earns competitive Boren Fellowship to study Spanish in Panama

A University of Delaware senior has been awarded a 2026 Boren Awards fellowship to study abroad in Panama.

James Mansfield, of Jersey City, New Jersey, will spend the next year in Panama City studying Spanish through immersive coursework and daily life. A cognitive science major with a minor in military science, Mansfield is also a member of the University’s Army ROTC program.

The Boren Fellowship, funded by the National Security Education Program, supports U.S. students studying less commonly taught languages in regions critical to U.S. interests. Recipients commit to working in the federal government after graduation, contributing language skills and cultural expertise to national security efforts.

“It is an amazing opportunity to be able to live and study abroad,” Mansfield said. “Becoming fluent in a second language is very valuable, and I am excited to apply Spanish to my professional career in the future.”

At UD, Mansfield studied Spanish through coursework and conversation programs while gaining international experience through military training.

At UD, Mansfield studied Spanish through coursework and conversation programs while gaining international experience through military training. In summer 2025, he trained with Central and South American military and police forces at the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, reinforcing his interest in language study and cross-cultural engagement.

He credited mentors from UD Army ROTC, the Delaware Army National Guard, active-duty Army personnel and University faculty for supporting his path to the fellowship.

“Leadership experience gained from UD Army ROTC and Spanish instruction at UD have prepared me for any potential challenges living abroad,” Mansfield said.

After graduating in May 2026, Mansfield plans to attend New York University to pursue a master’s degree in global affairs while commissioning as a second lieutenant in the Army National Guard. He hopes to one day work for the federal government.

“James has demonstrated a genuine commitment to language learning, leadership and public service throughout his time at the University of Delaware,” said Laura De Furio, UD’s Director of National Fellowships. “The Boren Award is an ideal fit for his academic and professional goals, and this opportunity in Panama will further strengthen the global perspective and cultural fluency that will serve him well in his future career.”
