UD celebrates International Darwin Day

How does the naturalist Charles Darwin’s work shape science and understanding of our world today? The UD community is invited to explore the answer with faculty experts from the College of Arts and Sciences as they share their research related to the renowned English naturalist at the University’s annual International Darwin Day event on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 4 p.m. in Gore Recital Hall in the Roselle Center for the Arts.

Darwin’s theory of evolution and natural selection in explaining the diversity of life has become the foundational theory of the life sciences. His legacy is celebrated each year on his birthday, with events around the world highlighting the principles of intellectual bravery, perpetual curiosity, scientific thinking and hunger for truth that drove Darwin’s work.

At UD’s event, Caleb Everett, dean and professor of anthropology, will give the keynote address, “Darwin and Our Understanding of Humanity.” Flash talks by three faculty members in the Department of Biological Sciences — neuroscientist Lisha Shao, biologist Salil Lachke and microbiologist Molly Sutherland — will examine research that touches on how humans have, and continue, to evolve.

The College of Arts and Sciences has participated in International Darwin Day for more than a decade, hosting speakers from a variety of academic disciplines who have attracted a diverse audience from campus and the community.
