Ways to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. throughout Delaware

Monday, Jan. 19, isn't just a day off school and work — it's an opportunity to celebrate the legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 

While the University of Delaware offices are closed, Winter Session classes are suspended, and many UD students are home for winter break, several events are scheduled around the state to honor the life of Dr. King. All are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. 

Attend a day of service

What: A day of reflection, community and action in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. This year’s theme, “Illustrating the Dream,” draws inspiration from Imprinted: Illustrating Race, currently on view, and celebrates the transformative power of art to inspire social change.

When: Monday, Jan. 19, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Where: Delaware Art Museum (2301 Kentmere Parkway, Wilmington, DE)

Know this: The event will include musical performances, coat and blanket drive, grocery giveaway, gallery tours, hands-on art activity and more.

Clean and march

What: Join West Side Grows Together for the 14th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Clean Up, Peace March, and Celebration — a day of service and demonstration of peace, community strength and call to action. 

When: Monday, Jan. 19, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: 1009 Sycamore Street, Wilmington, DE 19805

Know this: Attendees will also have the opportunity to take advantage of community resources, live music, free food, opportunities for further advocacy, family friendly activities and a small business marketplace.

Attend a musical tribute

What: Celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., with Elevation, the flagship,  intentionally diverse vocal ensemble of Elevate Vocal Arts, for a performance featuring the music of pioneering Black composers.

When: Sunday, Jan. 18, 3 p.m.

Where: The Chapel at DSU Downtown, 3 N Bradford St, Dover, DE 19904

Know this: Registration is required.

Attend a breakfast and volunteer

What: The Delaware State Bar Association presents its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast and Statewide Day of Service.

When: Monday, Jan. 19, 7:45 a.m.

Where: Chase Center on the Riverfront (815 Justison St. Wilmington, DE)

How much: Breakfast is $45.

Know this: This year’s keynote speakers are the father-daughter duo Richard Rothstein and Leah Rothstein, authors whose groundbreaking work continues Dr. King’s mission of equity and justice. Their talk will focus on practical, actionable steps each of us can take to help reverse institutional segregation and build more equitable communities. Community members may register to attend the breakfast or to assist in a number of service projects.

Attend a YMCA Open House

What: The YMCA of Delaware invites the community to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with special events and open houses that foster unity, service and community spirit.

When: Monday, Jan. 19

Where: All Delaware YMCA locations

Know this: These family-friendly events will showcase the Y’s commitment to strengthening the community. They will include access to facilities and fitness classes, fun activities for kids and families, and opportunities to learn more about the Y’s mission.

Volunteer in Delaware State Parks

What: MLK Day of Service

When: Monday, Jan. 19

Where: Brandywine Park, White Clay Creek State Park, Lums Pond State Park and Trap Pond State Park

Know this: Clear English Ivy in Brandywine Park, remove invasive plants in White Clay Creek State Park, trim overgrowth in Lums Pond State Park or remove litter in Trap Pond State Park.
