Instructor Lorraine Serva brings real-world experience to the classroom
The University of Delaware’s Division of Professional and Continuing Studies (UD PCS) will launch its Frontline Manager program on Sept. 16. This 10-week, in-person course is designed to help emerging leaders build confidence and practical skills to manage teams effectively.
Instructor Lorraine Serva, a seasoned HR executive, brings decades of experience in employee development and corporate training. Her approach emphasizes actionable tools grounded in research, enabling participants to apply what they learn immediately.
“We’re not talking pie-in-the-sky ideas," she said. "When we cover a topic like delegation, for example, we’ll create a practical task list focused on one question: ‘How will you start delegating when you return to work tomorrow?’”
Serva developed the course based on her work training entry-level employees into management roles at Iron Hill Brewery and SDI, a supply chain company. She values diverse perspectives and believes participants from different industries will enrich the course.
Key topics include managing former peers, conducting effective interviews and avoiding common new-manager mistakes.
“It can be incredibly challenging to lead people who were your peers just yesterday,” Serva said. “This course helps them understand not just what to do, but why certain approaches work.”
Ideal for newly promoted managers or those preparing for leadership roles, the course also benefits job seekers aiming to stand out.
“Imagine saying in an interview, ‘I’ve taken a course on this, and here’s how I’d handle that situation.’ That makes you an attractive candidate," Serva said.
Participants earn a noncredit certificate upon completion. Discounts are available for early registration, alumni and military personnel. Learn more at pcs.udel.edu/frontline-manager.
