In Memoriam: Craig Wilson

University librarian remembered as thoughtful, intentional leader with lifelong appreciation of the arts

Craig Wilson, retired assistant director of collections at the University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press, passed away on April 22, 2023. He was 77.

Mr. Wilson worked at the University from 1992 through 2012. The 20 years during which he served as assistant director of collections were pivotal years for academic libraries as they transitioned to focus on both print and electronic materials. Mr. Wilson provided both leadership and balance for this changing environment. He was a skilled negotiator in dealing with publishers of online databases and e-journals. During his 20-year tenure, the library’s print and online collections increased significantly.

Mr. Wilson brought a scholar’s perspective to his work. Under his direction, Special Collections continued to develop strong collections in areas that support teaching and research across many subject areas at the University as well as Delawareana, political papers and regional history. The digitization of Special Collections materials also began during Mr. Wilson’s tenure. He also worked closely with many donors whose collections have enhanced the Library’s holdings.

Mr. Wilson had a deep commitment to and appreciation of the arts in both his personal and professional life. His personal library was vast, with titles ranging from the 18th century to the present. He also enjoyed music, especially opera, and amassed a significant collection of sound recordings to support those interests in addition to attending performances at the Metropolitan Opera and other venues.

He was an exceptionally kind, thoughtful and considerate person in the way he treated those who worked with him. Mr. Wilson was characterized by many as a true gentleman. He listened to concerns and always acknowledged individual and group contributions. He felt that his job was to listen, provide direction, then step back and let the experts get the job done. Those who worked with him appreciated this encouragement and support.
